United Mile Play is back with targeted bonus offers

One of the most popular promotions for United loyalists is back with another round. That’s right: it’s time to check your account for a new United Mile Play offer.

United Mile Play is a promotion that lets you earn bonus miles when you register here and complete the task assigned to you by United.

Not every United MileagePlus member will receive a Mile Play offer each time, and the offers vary widely from one member to another. But it’s always worth checking whether you have an offer each time another round of this promotion launches.

I currently have a United Mile Play offer for 3,000 bonus miles when I book and take one trip with a minimum fare of $100 by Oct. 5.

Be sure to read the terms and conditions of your offer. In my case, United makes it clear that a trip is a “unique travel itinerary documented by United with a confirmation number,” that the fare must be at least $100 before taxes and fees, and that I must book the qualifying trip after registering for the offer. Additionally, only fares for eligible flights operated by United and United Express count.

United Mile Play offers vary by member

United Mile Play offers can vary widely among members. Here’s a look at the offers a few other TPG staffers currently have:

  • Annie Black: Book and take one trip to earn 3,900 bonus miles (must spend $200)
  • Carly Helfand: Book and take five trips to earn 19,000 bonus miles (must spend $200 on each trip)
  • Clint Henderson: Book and take three trips to earn 18,000 bonus miles (must spend $250 on each trip)
  • Gene Sloan: Book and take two trips to earn 2,500 bonus miles (must spend $300 on each trip)
  • Lyndsey Matthews: Book and take two trips to earn 13,000 bonus miles (must spend $250 on each trip)
  • Maggie Moran: Book and take two trips to earn 5,300 bonus miles (must spend $175 on each trip)
  • Nick Ewen: Book and take one trip to earn 5,500 bonus miles (must spend $250)
  • Zoe Jablow: Book and take three trips to earn 12,000 bonus miles (must spend $175 on each trip)

Gene, a loyal United flyer who has held United 1K status for most of the last 15 years, received the smallest bonus among the TPG staffers who reported offers. However, United isn’t giving all of its frequent flyers small bonuses. Carly flies United regularly and received one of the largest offers, albeit with five required trips.

Meanwhile, travelers like Lyndsey, Clint and Nick, who rarely fly with United due to airport preferences and status with other airlines, received offers that could incentivize them to shift a few flights to United.

Several of our staffers based in New York City reported that their Mile Play offers were labeled as “NYC member bonus” offers. And these offers are enticing some to book new travel, with Annie telling me, “I will definitely take a trip by Oct. 5 for those 3,900 miles.”

United Mile Play Level Up challenges

Some members also received Level Up challenges, which offer additional miles for completing tasks beyond the initial flight requirement. For example, Lyndsey got a Level Up challenge for up to 25,700 additional bonus miles if she completes three tasks.

Meanwhile, Annie got a Level Up challenge for up to 14,400 miles if she completes two tasks.

Annie told me she has already linked her Lyft account to Atmos Rewards (and doesn’t want to switch it to United MileagePlus) and isn’t currently interested in adding a United MileagePlus credit card to her wallet. But if Annie or Lyndsey wanted to open a United credit card, they could earn miles through both their Level Up challenges and one of the following welcome offers:

  • United Club℠ Card (see rates and fees): Earn up to 90,000 bonus miles: 80,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. Plus, earn 10,000 bonus miles after adding an authorized user in the first three months from account opening.
  • United Quest℠ Card (see rates and fees): Earn up to 70,000 bonus miles and 500 PQPs: 60,000 bonus miles and 500 PQPs after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. Plus, earn 10,000 bonus miles after adding an authorized user in the first three months from account opening.
  • United℠ Explorer Card (see rates and fees): Earn up to 60,000 bonus miles: 50,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 in the first three months from account opening. Plus earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles after adding an authorized user in the first three months from account opening.

Bottom line

It’s always worth checking for a United Mile Play offer when a new round launches. Just be sure to register before booking and carefully review the requirements of your specific offer.

My offer would provide 3,000 bonus miles after one qualifying trip, but I don’t have any travel by Oct. 5 for which booking a United-operated flight would make sense. So, I’ll likely let this offer go unused.
