United Airlines’ Oldest Active Jet Is 35 Years Old: Here’s Where It’s Still Flying

United Airlines has a large and diverse mainline fleet that reflects the varied reach of its route network. According to fleet data from Planespotters.net, its oldest active aircraft at the time of writing is N641UA, a 35.4-year-old Boeing 767-300ER that first flew in 1991. Despite its old age, the jet has remained busy of late, serving several different long-haul routes.

The jet has an extensive history at United, and it still tends to be deployed on similar routes today after more than three decades of service at the Chicago-based legacy carrier and founding Star Alliance member. It joins some of United’s other oldest aircraft, which are not far behind in terms of their age.

N461UA was delivered to United back in April 1991. The airframe has worn several different liveries during its 35 years at the carrier, and, inside, it has also had several different seating configurations. From April 1991 to November 2018, it had six first class seats, 26 in business, and 151 in economy for a total capacity of 183 guests. However, it has since become denser inside.

Indeed, in November 2018, it was reconfigured with 30 business and 184 economy seats, with its new total capacity being 214. It retained this layout until December 2022, and the following month, it re-emerged with 30 business, 24 premium economy, and 149 economy seats. It was also stored from July to December 2023 following a hard landing. The 767 is on the way out at United, according to CEO Scott Kirby.

“By the end of the decade, we will be well into retiring the 767.”

A Typical Week For N641UA

Using historical tracking data made available by Flightradar24, we can get an interesting snapshot into how United uses its oldest aircraft by taking a look at a week in its life. In this instance, we will examine the period from July 17 to July 23. This period started with an overnight rotation from Houston to Rio de Janeiro, which landed on July 18.

It returned to Houston that same day and, that evening, charted an eastbound course toward Europe. Its destination was Amsterdam, but it did not return to Houston. Instead, its westbound destination on July 20 was Washington DC, and, in the days that followed, it operated two round trips from DC to Venice and back. This was followed by another flight back to Amsterdam Schiphol on July 22.

After landing in the Dutch capital on July 23, it then returned to the US, but, instead of landing in Washington, the jet made its way back to Houston. At this point, this cycle of destinations looked set to start again, as its evening flight on July 23 was bound for Rio de Janeiro. Looking further back in time, N641UA has also flown to cities such as Lima, Newark, Nice, and Zurich this month.

Three Other United 767s Are 35+ Years Old

N641UA is actually one of four active examples of the 767-300ER at United that have exceeded the 35-year mark. N642UA ranks second, clocking in at 35.3 years old. Not far behind it are N643UA and N644UA, both of which have been flying for 35.2 years. United’s 767-300ERs have an overall average age of 30.4 years.

Apart from the 767-300ER, United’s oldest active narrowbodies are a selection of its 757-200 twinjets inherited from Continental Airlines. Three of them have exceeded 32 years of service: N58101 and N14102 are both 32.2 years old, while N33103 has been flying for 32.1 years. Its oldest active non-767 widebody is a 31.7-year-old 777-200 that, rather aptly, bears the registration N772UA. This particular twinjet has 364 seats.
