A Delta Air Lines flight from 
Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) in France to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) in the US state of Washington arrived in the Pacific Northwest more than ten hours late in the early hours of this morning after diverting twice. The service, which was operated by an Airbus A330-900, initially had to pause in London after suffering a sewage leak following its takeoff.
Following this stopover in the capital city of the UK, Delta Air Lines then had to adjust its filing for the onward leg to Seattle to include a stop in New York. This was done in order to facilitate a change of crew, due to the original pilots and flight attendants not having enough hours left on the clock to make it back to Seattle. To add insult to injury, catering was limited after the initial meals had to be binned.
The First Diversion Was To Address A Sewage Leak
Delta Air Lines flight DL81 is a daily service from Paris to Seattle. According to Flightradar24, it is scheduled to leave at 4:00 PM and land at 5:34 PM, giving it a 10.5-hour block time when accounting for the time change. However, yesterday’s iteration of the flight ended up being delayed by this long, resulting in a bleary-eyed arrival at four in the morning. The first event in the chain was a sewage leak.
According to View From The Wing, this occurred shortly after the flight’s departure from Paris, as it was flying northwest over the English Midlands. The toilet in question had reportedly already been worked on in Paris before takeoff, raising questions as to whether the flight should have left at all. After leaving Paris at 4:30 PM, the jet landed at London Heathrow (LHR) at 5:08 PM. A Delta spokesperson said:
“This is not the experience we strive to provide, and we’re focused on getting our customers to their destinations as quickly and safely as possible.”
Crew Hour Limits Prompted The Second Stopover
With the aircraft, an Airbus A330-900 that bears the registration N410DZ, safely on the ground at 
London Heathrow Airport, staff then got to work dealing with the aftermath of the leak, which had seen liquid spread through the carpet. Passengers were unable to deplane while the cleaning work took place, and the flight ultimately took off again just under three hours after its arrival, at 7:55 PM local time.
Unfortunately, it did so without a proper complement of inflight meals. This, a passenger reportedly told View From The Wing, was because those that had initially been loaded onto the jet in Paris were discarded due to being spoiled as a result of the leak. Sadly for the flight’s passengers, replacements were not loaded during the Heathrow stopover, with the offering thus largely limited to pre-arrival snacks.
With the flight already heavily delayed, it then got even later due to a second stopover needing to occur. Specifically, it paused en route at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City for a crew change, due to the initial team not having enough hours to reach Seattle. The jet touched down at JFK at 10:08 PM local time, and was back in the air 3.5 hours later, at 1:38 AM the following morning.
The Aircraft Is Back Off To Europe Today
The last leg of Delta Air Lines’ flight DL81’s unplanned two-stop odyssey from Paris to the Pacific Northwest took just under 5.5 hours, with the service finally reaching 
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at 4:06 AM today. Compared to the scheduled arrival time of 5:34 PM yesterday, this represented a delay of some ten hours and 28 minutes, leaving passengers eligible to request financial compensation.
View From The Wing notes that, with the flight having originated in Europe, been over 3,500 km (1,890 NM) long, and arrived more than four hours late, each flyer is entitled to €600 ($692). If all 209 of the passengers on yesterday’s flight put in a claim, this would leave Delta some $144,628 out of pocket. As for N410DZ, it is currently scheduled to operate flight DL42 to Rome (FCO) today, leaving at 2:00 PM.
