The Transportation Security Administration has rolled out a new perk for military veterans and current service members, as well as their families, at more than 30 airports across the United States of America. This comes in the form of a dedicated ‘Honor Lane’ at security checkpoints at participating airports, with military flyers at airports without these lanes also able to be fast-tracked upon showing their ID.
As a country where the military has a larger presence in everyday life than most, flyers in the US will be no strangers to such treatment for those who are or have been in the armed forces. After all, military members are often invited to board flights first, and can sometimes also avail themselves of more generous bag allowances. Let’s take a closer look at the new policy and what it means for passengers.
Another Perk For Military Flyers
As noted by View From The Wing, this benefit, in and of itself, is not brand new. Rather, it first came to fruition in July 2025, when Gold Star families were given free PreCheck access as part of a wider ‘Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease’ scheme. Now, however, the TSA has expanded its offering on this front by rolling out dedicated ‘Honor Lanes’ for current and former service personnel at 33 airports.
For military members and their families, a key benefit of these dedicated fast-track lanes is that they don’t need to be in uniform to make use of them. Instead, they simply have to present a valid military or veteran ID. The TSA notes that, for veterans, some documents grant instant access, while others only establish veteran status and must be shown alongside another form of ID. It goes on to explain that:
“In airports without dedicated lanes, show your valid military or veteran ID to the lane monitor for front-of-the-line service.”
What Does This Mean For Passengers?
For current or former military personnel and their families, the rollout of these new Honor Lanes by the TSA marks another airport perk designed to make their lives easier as a way of giving back to the armed forces community. However, for regular passengers, there are concerns that this initiative, though well-meaning, may result in greater congestion elsewhere, at a time when TSA is already busy.
View From The Wing highlights this situation, noting that there is a difference between expediting active military personnel on deployment and those who are off-duty or no longer serve in such roles. There is also an argument to be made that, when it comes to serving a country and its people, such privileges should probably also be rolled out to those working in education and the emergency services.
On the other hand, the dedicated military lanes may potentially solve a separate conflict. Specifically, as Inside Flyer notes, armed forces personnel with TSA PreCheck can technically leapfrog non-military PreCheck users, even if they arrived after them. As such, such lanes remove this clash, but, either way, for regular passengers without access to priority treatment, they may cause congestion elsewhere.
Which Airports Have The Dedicated Lanes?
The 33 airports where current and former military service personnel and their families can access dedicated lines at TSA checkpoints are spread all across the United States of America, and come in various different shapes and sizes. For instance, certain large hubs are included, such as Anchorage, Atlanta, Charlotte, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Las Vegas, LAX, Miami, Phoenix (active only), and Seattle.
Other big hitters include the likes of Cleveland, Columbus, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Nashville, Oklahoma City, Raleigh-Durham, San Antonio, San Diego, St Louis, and Tampa. Meanwhile, at the smaller end of the scale, dedicated lines can be found in Albany, Albuquerque, Birmingham, Boise, Casper, El Paso, Jackson, Little Rock, and Sioux Falls.
