“Truthfully, it’s heartbreaking”: Warframe dev on the hole that Destiny 2 leaves behind

There’s long been a bit of a rivalry between Destiny and Warframe’s respective communities because of them both being shooty, sci-fi, MMOy joints. But when it comes to the community director behind Warframe, the recent end to new Destiny 2 updates and expansions is no victory, and mostly just finds the whole situation to be “devastating.”

Speaking to Eurogamer, community director and live ops lead Megan Everett shared that the Destiny 2 news is “heartbreaking. It’s earth-shattering. I never thought I’d ever see the day where I’d read an article from Bungie about Destiny 2 essentially shutting down.” Everett noted nobody is “celebrating the fact that this has happened to Destiny, and its players and that story,” and spoke of how even though the two games have been spoken of as in competition, she believes that “a game is healthy when you have competitors, and [Destiny’s developers] have done such an amazing job at trying to grow that story regardless of whatever situation they were in.”

Everett made specific mention of how one of the saddest elements was how following the end of support announcement, many came out of the woodworks to show support after a long period of negativity. “They’ve been getting a lot of negativity for all this time, and it’s like, where was all this love! People need to put the hate away and show the love, because they could have really used that. I know it was there, but it wasn’t as vocal as maybe some of the negativity.”

Looping back to those Destiny and Warframe comparisons, Everett also made one thing clear for those looking to switch games: “We tried the PvP thing, and we’re not a PvP game! If you’re coming to Warframe trying to scratch that itch, you’re going to have that itch for a long time.” At the very least, Destiny 2’s servers will live on, so you’ll at least have somewhere to scratch that itch if you need to.
