America’s trade deficit with the rest of the world grew in July to the highest level seen in more than a year, prompting an outraged response from the Commander in Chief.

The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis announced Thursday that the goods and services deficit increased by $17.4 billion month over month, from $71.2 billion in June to $88.6 billion in July.

The nation’s exports totaled around $310.7 billion—$6.6 billion less than the flow of goods to other countries seen in June, as the U.S. sold less crude oil and gold to trading partners. Meanwhile, July imports amounted to $399.3 billion, a $10.8 billion increase from the month prior, driven chiefly by technology like semiconductors and computer parts, likely to service growth in the artificial intelligence sector.

The government’s data showed that the goods deficit in particular increased by $17.6 billion to $119.6 billion, while the services surplus ticked up from $0.2 billion to $31.0 billion.

Regardless of the rising export deficit, White House senior deputy press secretary Kush Desai painted the news as “more evidence that President Trump’s trade agenda is working.” The year-to-date figures show the goods and services deficit fell by $188.4 billion (29.6 percent) from the same period in 2025. Exports grew by 12 percent—a total of $237.2 billion—while imports increased by 1.9 percent, or $48.8 billion, during that time.

“Capital goods imports, the machinery and equipment we need to reindustrialize, were the highest share of goods imports on record,” Desai wrote in a post on X.

However, the persistent and sizable trade deficits with countries like China, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, the European Union and Mexico remain despite President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff regime and his argument that duties would act as an antidote to global imbalances.

The deficit with Canada did decrease, however, to $3.2 billion, in the face of a tit-for-tat trade war that has been raging for the past month. Canadian tariffs on U.S. imports will take effect on Tuesday, which will no doubt constrain the flow of American-made products to the north, so that win may be short-lived.

There’s little historical evidence that the administration’s trade platform has materially decreased the deficit or that the year-and-a-half-old strategy will yield such results moving forward. The July 2026 deficit is bigger than the average monthly deficit seen in 2024, before Trump was elected, and it is the largest seen since “Liberation Day” in April 2025, when the tariffs first took effect.

Trump, for his part, appeared sour over the numbers. In an all-caps Truth Social post on Friday, he threatened to halt trade with partners that have a deficit with the U.S. unless the Federal Reserve agrees to lower interest rates—an objective he has been pushing for some time.

The Fed Board, with its great new leader, must get smart – BE PATRIOTS for a change.”
