Trains Collide in Indonesia, Killing at Least 14 and Injuring Dozens

Two trains collided near the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens more, the authorities said on Tuesday.

The collision happened on Monday night after trains around Bekasi Timur Station were told to stop because a taxi was stuck on the tracks at a railroad crossing near the station.

First a commuter train hit the taxi, according to the authorities. No one was hurt.

But shortly afterward, an intercity train carrying 240 passengers on a different track failed to stop completely and crashed into another commuter train that had stopped at the station, said Franoto Wibowo, a spokesman for Indonesia’s state-owned railway operator.

Footage of the crossing from Monday night showed the front of the first commuter train pressed up against the side of a taxi on the track. Images from the station showed rescue workers carrying injured people out of damaged cars of the second commuter train, passing stretchers through the windows.

Rescue teams worked through the night, searching for survivors in the wreckage, said Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency. He said several people were freed. The collision injured at least 84 other people, according to the rescue agency.

The 14 people who were killed in the collision were all on the commuter train, the authorities said.

The intercity train was traveling from Jakarta to Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, on the other end of Java, the country’s main island.

Rail services near the Indonesian capital remained disrupted on Tuesday, the authorities said.
