Tigers summon RHP Brenan Hanifee from Triple-A Toledo

Anaheim, Calif. — Right-hander Brenan Hanifee, for the third time this season, has been summoned from Triple-A Toledo.

He will occupy the roster spot vacated by lefty starter Framber Valdez, who is on the bereavement list tending to a death in his family.

Manager AJ Hinch said Valdez was already on his way back from the Dominican Republic and could be activated as early as Saturday.

“We had a game tonight and we were going to play short-handed,” Hinch said.

Hanifee, 28, has covered 13.2 innings in 14 games for the Tigers in his two previous stints. He was one of the club’s more effective relievers in May, allowing just two runs in 11 innings with six strikeouts and two walks.

When: 10:07 p.m., Saturday, Angels Stadium, Anaheim, Calif.

LHP Tarik Skubal (5-4, 3.06), Tigers: This begins a potentially pivotal three-week stretch for Skubal and the Tigers. This is one of three starts he is expected to make before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. It’s also the second of a critical 13-game stretch for the Tigers in their quest to remain in the playoff hunt and compel president Scott Harris to buy and not sell at the deadline.

RHP Grayson Rodriguez (3-2, 7.55), Angels: He is still trying to get back to form after missing 2025 with elbow surgery and having this season stunted and limited to seven starts with back tightness. He soldiered through 5.1 innings (three runs, six hits) against the Twins in his return off the IL before the break. At 6-5 and with 7-2 extension, his 96-mph four-seam fastball is a weapon, as are the changeup and slider he throws off it.
