The Witcher 3’s multiplayer mod, the world’s premier tool for forming big towers of multiple Geralts precariously perched atop each others’ shoulders, has added another string to its bow. You can now meet up with some mates at a tavern to play games of Gwent against them, a concept so appealing CD Projekt made a whole game out of it.

As announced via The Witcher Online mod’s Discord, the freshly released 3.0 update is all about letting gaggles of Geralts unleash their card collections.

As demonstrated by modder Rejuvenate in the video above, you can challenge other players to Gwent games via the interaction menu the mod pops up when you approach them. From there, you choose whether you want a match with time-limited turns to stop folks mulling over moves forever, and pick how much gold you’d like to bet on yourself winning. The decks and cards you’ve got at your disposal are the ones you’ve collected in your Witcher 3 playthrough up to that point, so getting some of the Gwent-centric quests out of the way solo first seems a good idea.

Given the mod lets players ride around on each others’ shoulders, I’m a bit sad there doesn’t look to be a formal option to stake a free piggyback ride from Crow’s Perch to Novigrad on a match, but there’s nothing to stop such a thing being thrown in as verbal stipulation.

On a serious note, given that CD Projekt ended active development of their Gwent game back in 2023 (though servers are still running and the community now controls balancing changes), I can see the appeal in challenging your mates to some Gwent games via The Witcher Online instead. It’s also not like CD Projekt’s Gwent let you follow-up matches with a multi-Geralt dance battle either. This 3.0 update also fixes a collision bug that occurred when sitting on some chairs in taverns, so sitting down for a game of cards is less likely to end in glitchy fashion.

If you fancy giving Witcher Online a go, you’ll need a non-pirated copy of The Witcher 3 from either Steam or GOG, updated to version 4.04. If you’re unsure which version you’re running, verifying the game files should push you up to that latest one. The Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone DLCs, plus the Community Patch – Shared Imports mod are also musts. A setup guide from the modders themselves covers the rest.
