The Ultra-Long Airbus A321XLR Routes Flying In 2026

The Airbus A321XLR has opened up enormous possibilities for carriers that can get their hands on one. These jets combine widebody range with narrowbody efficiency. That has allowed carriers to link new city pairs without having to meet the high demand required to sustain widebody service. Meanwhile, carriers can also operate pre-existing routes with substantially lower operating costs.

Below, we analyze four routes from three airlines utilizing the Airbus A321XLR that have recently been introduced – Indigo Airlines’ Delhi to Istanbul, Iberia Airlines’ Madrid to Washington Dulles and Santo Domingo, and Aer Lingus’ Dublin to Nashville – and explore why the A321XLR is the ideal aircraft for such routes.

A321XLR Overview

The A321XLR is the most advanced offshoot of the A321neo series. Airbus has developed this jet to combine the incredibly low operating costs of its modern single-aisle jets with the range that we usually expect from a widebody airliner. This aircraft’s incredible range opens up flight times of up to 11 hours, with the aircraft covering 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 km). That means a carrier operating out of Dallas can use the jet to reach cities like Oslo, Lisbon, São Paulo, and Santiago. Inside, passengers can enjoy the Airspace cabin, which allows airlines to install wide economy class seats and lie-flat business and first class seats.

The table below details the specifications for the A321XLR, utilizing Airbus’ data:

Seating

Maximum of 244 or 206-220 in a typical 2-class configuration

Length

146 ft (44.5 m)

Wingspan

117 ft 5 in (35.8 m)

Height

40 ft (11.8 m)

Range

4,700 nautical miles

Maximum takeoff weight

223,000 lbs

As with the A321neo, this aircraft is highly efficient, reducing operating costs and lowering fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat by up to 30%. Airbus claims that this makes the A321XLR “the perfect route opener with lower risk for point-to-point operations.” The carrier goes on to write, “It opens new opportunities for non-stop flights linking primary and secondary cities all around the globe.”

IndiGo Airlines: Delhi To Istanbul

The world’s longest Airbus A321XLR route, pushing the A321XLR right to its limit, is IndiGo, which has flown the jet daily from Delhi to Istanbul since February 28. This behemoth route takes 10 hours and 15 minutes. This route is not new. Instead, India’s largest carrier has flown it since 2019, using high-capacity 500+ seat Boeing 777-300ERs that were leased from Turkish Airlines. This route was an essential part of the two carriers’ close relations, with IndiGo using Istanbul as its connection to Europe, facilitated by codeshare agreements with the Turkish flag carrier.

The table below shows the current state of the IndiGo fleet, according to planespotters.net. It shows a dominance of modern Airbus narrowbody jets:

When using the 777-300ER, IndiGo scheduled just eight hours and 50 minutes for this route. The longer flight time is explained by the A321XLR’s lower cruising speed than that of a 777, further exacerbated by the need to avoid Pakistani airspace due to ongoing poor relations between India and Pakistan. The A321XLR flying this route will have a capacity of 195 seats.

Iberia: Madrid To Washington Dulles

Last April, the Spanish flag carrier renewed its flights from Madrid to Washington Dulles and announced that the A321XLR would be completing these journeys. That fact is unsurprising, given that Iberia has shown strong confidence in the A321XLR, having served as its launch operator. The decision came after the suspension of the A321XLR from Iberia’s Washington winter schedule. It also followed months of delays from the initially scheduled start in January 2025.

When Iberia relaunched this route, it planned to operate it seven times per week, accelerating after a six-times-weekly schedule from April to August 2025. The route’s length of nine hours and 40 minutes of flight time puts it out of reach for most narrowbody aircraft. Iberia explained the possibilities for the route opened up by the A321XLR, “Thanks to this new model, with a narrow fuselage but capable of crossing the Atlantic, Iberia increases the 4 weekly flights from 2024 and will have two additional frequencies to the US capital from April to August.”

The use of the A321XLR displays a growing interest in flights between the US and Spain. American tourists love visiting cities like Madrid and Barcelona, while Washington DC, Miami, and Los Angeles remain popular among Spanish travelers. Iberia has also been able to take advantage of Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD) and its position as a hub connecting passengers from the US to other parts of Europe and to Africa.

Another astonishingly long Iberia route making use of the A321XLR is from Madrid to Santo Domingo. This route has a block time of nine hours and 35 minutes. It was operated between three and four times weekly until March 2026 and has since been expanded to daily services. This route was first flown on October 2, 2025, with a flight time of seven hours and 44 minutes, according to Flightradar24.com data. It has an impressive distance of 3,620 nautical miles (6,700 km). This distance pushes the A321XLR right to its limit, given that Iberia has stated that A321XLRs in its configuration (14 business class and 168 economy class seats) have a realistic range of 3,920 nautical miles (7,960 km).

This is another case of a route that was previously operated by an older aircraft. Iberia has historically used its Airbus A330-300s to serve this route. These jets have a far higher capacity, with 292 seats in Iberia’s configuration. They also have a faster cruising speed, although that has only increased the block time allowed by five minutes.

Both the Santo Domingo and Washington Dulles A321XLR routes should be seen in the context of a broader expansion of Iberia’s transatlantic services using this aircraft. When Simple Flying’s James Pearson wrote about this route in June 2025, he outlined several upcoming A321XLR transatlantic services. Destinations included San Juan, Recife, Fortaleza, New York, and Boston.

Another incredibly long A321XLR transatlantic route that was launched in 2025 is Aer Lingus’ flight from Dublin to Nashville, with a nine-hour and 20-minute block time and an eight-hour and 20-minute average flight time. When added, this flight to the country music capital of the world was the Irish flag carrier’s longest narrowbody flight. It also made Aer Lingus the only carrier to operate a direct service from Dublin to Nashville, with Nashville International Airport (BNA) being the United States’ 23rd busiest.

Commenting on the route launch, Lynne Embleton, Aer Lingus Chief Executive Officer, said, “The new route to Nashville is a milestone for the airline, enabling us to advance our ambitions and reach further into the US, flying to previously unserved markets in North America, including Indianapolis, which commences in May. The new Airbus A321XLR, with its extended range, and our geographic position on the Western edge of Europe opens up exciting new destinations and opportunities.”

The carrier operates this route three to five times a week. It was initially operated four times a week: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Another carrier showing great commitment to the A321XLR, although not rivaling the incredibly long routes mentioned in this article, is Air Canada. This carrier has unveiled new lie-flat seating aboard the aircraft, making use of Collins’ Aurora seating for this new business class product. These will be in a 1-1 configuration with every seat angled away from the windows. 14 such suites will be available. Meanwhile, the economy class product will use Meridian+ seats. This class will have 168 seats available. Air Canada hopes to have these aircraft enter service within a few months.

Cynthia Muklevicz, the Vice President of Global Airlines & Lessors at Collins Aerospace, said: “Aurora is designed to provide a widebody business class experience on single-aisle aircraft, offering passengers the comfort, space, and privacy expected on long-haul flights (…) to deliver a true premium experience.” A close partnership between Air Canada and Collins Aerospace has been essential to ensure that the seats fit perfectly with the dimensions of an A321XLR.

Following an initial commitment for 26 A321XLRs made in March 2022, Air Canada has upped its order to 30 aircraft, according to ch-aviation. Airbus has been progressing well toward completing the order, with the first of these, A321XLR taking its maiden flight in February 2026. It remains to be seen how much Air Canada will use its A321XLR for truly long-haul aviation. The only flight shown by Cirium is domestic, with 68 trips planned from Montreal to Calgary in 2026, with another to Toronto and two to Vancouver.
