The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Nintendo Direct announced, with new artwork hailing the return of some unexpected names

Nintendo has announced another Direct dedicated to its upcoming film sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Direct itself will take place on 9th March, at 9pm UK time. As with previous Super Mario Galaxy Movie showcases such as this, no game information will be included in the broadcast. You can tune into the Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct via YouTube or on the Nintendo Today app.

In addition to announcing the Direct, Nintendo also shared some new artwork for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which reveals some perhaps unexpected characters which will be popping up on the film’s release.

As you can see via the image below, the black-clad Ninjis (or Ninjies) will be making a showing in the sequel. I hadn’t clocked them in the film promos before, but these star-shaped devil-like ninja creatures first appeared in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2, and I always thought their skin was black and those red buttons were there for modesty, but that’s just me. Ninji has since popped up in Mario spin-offs like Super Mario Party Jamboree and the Switch’s golf game.

The new Super Mario Galaxy Movie also gives us a look at Birdo – a favourite here at Eurogamer – joined by Mouser, a boss introduced in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2.

Oh, and Wart is also there. Wart, for those unaware, is a frog-like creature, and a main antagonist in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to release in cinemas next month, on 1st April (not fooling).

Along with the above characters, a recent cinema listing may have accidentally let slip another face that could well pop up in the sequel alongside Mario and co.
