The Greatest Lesson I Have Learned Recently: Life Is More Than Just Survival

By Anowar Sadak

For many years, I believed that surviving another day was the greatest achievement a person could have. As a Rohingya who was born and raised in Arakan (Rakhine State), Myanmar, I grew up surrounded by fear, violence, discrimination, and loss. Since childhood, I have watched villages burn, families become separated, and innocent people lose everything they own. Survival became our daily goal.

But recently, my perspective has begun to change.

I have realized that life is not meant to be lived only in survival mode. Every human being deserves more than simply staying alive. We deserve dignity, education, freedom, peace, hope, and the opportunity to dream about tomorrow.

Living in a refugee camp has taught me many painful lessons, but it has also shown me the incredible strength of the human spirit. Even in the darkest moments, I have met people who continue to smile, children who still dream despite having no proper schools, and families who continue helping one another despite having almost nothing.

This has changed the way I see life.

I have learned that our circumstances do not have to define the value of our voices. Even when the world seems silent, telling our stories matters. Writing has become my way of preserving memories, honoring those we have lost, and reminding the world that behind every headline are real human lives.

Another lesson I have learned is that education is one of the most powerful forms of hope. A book can cross borders that people cannot. A story can reach hearts that politics cannot. Knowledge has the power to challenge hatred, inspire understanding, and protect history from being forgotten.

I have also realized that peace should never be taken for granted. Many people wake up each morning without fear of bombs, gunfire, or displacement. For people like us, peace is not an ordinary part of life, it is a dream we continue to pray for.

This lesson has changed my perspective forever.

Instead of asking only how I can survive, I now ask how I can leave behind something meaningful. If my articles, poems, books, and stories can help even one person understand the suffering of displaced communities or inspire compassion, then my voice has served a purpose.

Life has taught me that pain can either silence us or strengthen us. I choose to let it strengthen me.

I still dream of the day when every child in Arakan can go to school without fear, every family can sleep peacefully in their own home, and no one will be forced to flee because of war or persecution.

Until that day comes, I will continue writing not only about suffering but also about hope, resilience, and the belief that every human life has equal value.

Sometimes, the greatest lesson is not learning how to survive.
It is learning why we must continue to hope.

“The greatest lesson life has taught me is that survival keeps us alive, but hope, education, peace, and the courage to tell our stories give life its true meaning.”
