
The Airbus A380 was designed to remain in service for decades, carrying hundreds of passengers between the world’s largest airports. Several former China Southern Airlines airframes, however, have reached a very different destination. After the carrier withdrew its five-aircraft superjumbo fleet, multiple A380s were ferried to California’s Mojave Air and Space Port, where they were placed into storage. At least four are now listed by Jet Midwest as “aircraft in dismantle,” suggesting that their future lies in component recovery rather than a return to passenger operations.
The aircraft are relatively young by commercial aviation standards, with the oldest only about 15 years old. Their dismantling demonstrates the unusual economics of the A380, an aircraft that can retain substantial structural life while becoming difficult to operate, lease, or sell as a complete passenger jet. The Mojave airframes are not simply abandoned aircraft. They are becoming sources of engines, landing gear, avionics, flight controls, and other components that remain valuable to the smaller global A380 fleet.
China Southern’s Superjumbo Fleet Had A Short Commercial Life
China Southern was the only Chinese airline to operate the A380. It received five between October 2011 and February 2013, using them primarily on high-demand domestic routes and selected international services from
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN). The fleet was intended to provide substantial capacity between major Chinese cities, particularly during periods when demand supported very large aircraft.
The A380’s commercial prospects changed considerably during the 2010s. Airlines increasingly favored twin-engine widebodies that could offer lower fuel consumption, more route flexibility, and better economics on markets that did not consistently require the capacity of a four-engine superjumbo. The coronavirus pandemic accelerated that shift, as international travel restrictions removed the demand that had supported many A380 operations.
China Southern announced in 2022 that it would retire its remaining A380s by the end of the year. The first two aircraft, B-6136 and B-6137, had already left revenue service in late 2021. Both were ferried from Guangzhou to Mojave in February 2022. The final two aircraft, including B-6139, identified as manufacturer’s serial number 88, followed in December 2022. B-6139 departed Guangzhou for Mojave on December 21, while another aircraft, B-6140, made the same journey. China Southern’s five-aircraft fleet had therefore disappeared from active service within little more than a year after the airline formally committed to retiring the type. China Southern’s A380s were delivered during the type’s early production years, and their relatively young ages might ordinarily have made them candidates for further service. The difficulty was finding a commercial role that could justify the costs of operating and maintaining such a large aircraft.
Four Airframes Are Now Listed For Dismantling
Jet Midwest’s current dismantling inventory lists four former China Southern A380-800s at Mojave. The aircraft are N110PK, N291JM, N296JM, and an airframe identified by manufacturer’s serial number 88. The inventory records the aircraft as having Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines and identifies China Southern as their last operator. N291JM and N296JM were formerly China Southern aircraft B-6136 and B-6137, respectively. Both arrived at Mojave in February 2022, were transferred to Jet Midwest, and are now recorded by Planespotters.net as partially scrapped.
N115PK followed a similar path. It was withdrawn from service in November 2022, moved to Mojave in December, and later recorded as partially scrapped. The aircraft is approximately 14 years old, which makes its fate particularly notable. A passenger aircraft of that age would normally remain a potential candidate for a second operator, a freighter conversion, or continued service with its original owner. The available records do not establish that every part of each airframe has already been removed. “Aircraft in dismantle” describes the current commercial status of the assets, while “partially scrapped” indicates that the process has begun. Some components may already have been removed, inspected, and sold, while other portions of the aircraft may remain on the Mojave ramp.
The records also do not prove that no airline expressed interest in acquiring the aircraft. The stronger conclusion is that Jet Midwest has identified dismantling as the most appropriate current use for these particular airframes. They are evaluating their future based on the value of their components rather than the possibility of another passenger operation.
The A380’s Size Makes A Second Life Difficult
The A380’s central commercial problem is its scale. The aircraft can carry more than 500 passengers in a typical multi-class configuration, while its two full passenger decks require specialized airport facilities, boarding procedures, maintenance equipment, and ground-support arrangements. Those requirements are manageable for airlines operating large fleets, but they become difficult to justify when only a few aircraft remain.

A carrier considering a used A380 must also account for four engines, extensive landing gear, a large cabin, and a maintenance program designed around a relatively small worldwide fleet. The aircraft’s operating costs are not determined only by its age, but are influenced by the number of seats that it can fill, the availability of suitable routes, the cost of heavy maintenance, and the limited number of potential replacement aircraft. The pandemic exposed those weaknesses. Many A380s were parked because airlines could not fill them, and some never returned to service. Even when passenger demand recovered, the market had changed. Airlines could use smaller twin-engine aircraft to serve more destinations at higher frequencies, while widebodies such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner offered long-range capability with lower fuel consumption and greater network flexibility.
The A380 also faces a limited secondary market. A used aircraft can be attractive when its capacity matches a carrier’s network, but the number of airlines able to use a superjumbo profitably is small. A prospective operator must invest in training, maintenance capability, spare parts, airport compatibility, and cabin refurbishment. Those costs can outweigh the purchase price of the aircraft itself. For that reason, an A380 can become economically obsolete before it becomes structurally obsolete. The aircraft may have many years of potential service remaining, yet its value as a complete airliner can fall below the value of its individual components. This is the condition that has brought the former China Southern jets to Mojave.
Engines And Landing Gear Hold Much Of The Value
The most valuable components on a retired A380 are often its engines. The China Southern aircraft in Jet Midwest’s inventory are fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent 900 powerplants, an engine used by several A380 operators. Although the number of active A380 airlines is limited, the continued operation of the type creates demand for serviceable engines, engine modules, and replacement parts. A retired aircraft may also contain engines with different maintenance histories from the airframe. Engines can be removed and exchanged during the aircraft’s life, meaning a relatively young or recently overhauled powerplant may retain substantial value even when the surrounding airframe is no longer commercially useful. The same principle applies to auxiliary power units, nacelles, and other propulsion-related equipment.

Landing gear is another important source of value. The A380’s main landing gear is unusually large and complex because the aircraft must support its substantial weight during ground operations. Aviation Week reported that a new A380 main landing-gear assembly could cost approximately $25 million, making serviceable used gear attractive to operators seeking to avoid the cost and lead time associated with new equipment.
Other recoverable items include avionics, flight-control surfaces, hydraulic components, electrical equipment, windows, doors, and cabin fittings. Each part must be removed, inspected, documented, and evaluated before it can be sold for use on another aircraft. The value of these parts is supported by the scarcity of A380 material in the aftermarket. Because fewer than 300 A380s were delivered, the supply of used components is much smaller than for common narrowbody types. That limited supply can make dismantling financially attractive even when the airframe itself has little resale value.
Mojave Is A Temporary Home Before The Parts Market
Mojave provides the conditions needed for long-term aircraft storage and dismantling. Its dry climate reduces moisture exposure, while the large airport environment offers space for aircraft that no longer have an immediate operational role. Storage lets owners and asset managers preserve aircraft while evaluating potential buyers, parts demand, or teardown opportunities. Once an aircraft enters dismantling, the process is more methodical than simply cutting up the airframe. Engines, landing gear, avionics, flight controls, and other high-value equipment are removed first. The cabin is then stripped of seats, galleys, lavatories, entertainment equipment, and other reusable items. Remaining materials are separated for recycling or disposal.
The process can take considerable time because every potentially valuable component must be handled carefully. A part removed from an aircraft is not automatically suitable for installation elsewhere. Its maintenance records, service history, condition, and certification status determine whether it can be sold as serviceable, repaired, used for parts, or sent for material recycling. Airbus has previously demonstrated the scale of A380 dismantling through its work with TARMAC Aerosave. When TARMAC deconstructed an early A380, it removed thousands of components before reducing the remaining structure to recyclable material. Airbus said the process achieved a recovery rate of more than 90% for the aircraft.
Jet Midwest operates a similar aftermarket model. The company says it has acquired, disassembled, sold, or leased more than 650 aircraft, with millions of parts in inventory and a large portfolio of aircraft and engine assets under management. Its dismantling operation includes component removal, inventory tagging, storage, and distribution to airlines, maintenance organizations, and other customers.
The former China Southern A380s are therefore moving through an established industrial process. Their identities as passenger aircraft will gradually disappear, but their useful equipment can continue supporting the aircraft that remain in service.
A380’s Afterlife Will Be Measured In Components
The former China Southern A380s at Mojave illustrate how an aircraft can reach the end of its commercial life long before reaching the end of its engineering life. N291JM, N296JM, N115PK, and the airframe identified as MSN 88 are relatively young, yet Jet Midwest now lists them for dismantling. Their most valuable future lies in the parts that can support the remaining fleet. Engines, landing gear, avionics, flight controls, and other components can be recovered, inspected, and returned to the aftermarket. The process allows operators to reduce maintenance costs while extending the service life of aircraft that still have suitable routes and sufficient demand.
The lesson is that the A380’s legacy will not depend only on how many superjumbos continue flying. It will also depend on the aftermarket infrastructure that keeps those aircraft operational. As the global fleet shrinks, retired examples may become increasingly valuable sources of scarce components. Mojave is not simply where these aircraft were sent to disappear. It is where parts of their operating lives can continue through the A380s that remain in the sky.
