The Embraer E-Jet E2 family was designed to fill the gap between traditional regional jets and larger narrowbody aircraft. However, the largest member of the family, the E195-E2, is increasingly being used for missions that defy the “regional” label. With dozens of sectors over 2,000 miles long and some flights lasting over six hours, the E2 family is flying routes nobody expected it to.

Across the board, at least on the long-range side of the E2’s performance envelope, the aircraft is primarily being used on leisure routes to popular vacation destinations. This lets carriers operate between smaller airports and offer countless connections to destinations they likely wouldn’t otherwise serve. Together, flights across Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia demonstrate how the E2’s combination of range, efficiency, and relatively low capacity is allowing airlines to serve some unexpected markets.

Up To 3,000 Miles: The Embraer E2’s Impressive Performance

The E2 family consists of more than just one aircraft. The E175-E2, E190-E2, and E195-E2 are all updated variants of older Embraer aircraft and sport the E2 designation. Out of these, however, the E195-E2 is the largest member of the E2 family and has become by far the best-selling E2 variant. With a typical single-class configuration of around 132 seats and a two-class configuration of 120 seats, the E195-E2 slots in perfectly between the 160 seats on a standard Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 and a 76-seat E175, a perfect example of Embraer’s attempt to carve out a market between regional aircraft and conventional narrowbodies.

Taking a closer look at the E195-E2’s performance numbers, the aircraft boasts a maximum range of up to 3,000 nautical miles (5,550 km), although in practice aircraft rarely operate at this maximum range because of a variety of operational constraints. The E195-E2 also offers a cruise speed of up to Mach 0.82 and can operate at altitudes up to 41,000 feet (12,497 meters). The other two aircraft, the E175-E2 and E190-E2, also offer impressive range for their size, with ranges up to 2,000 nautical miles (3,700 km) and 2,950 nautical miles (5,460 km), respectively.

The economics of the E2 family are just as important as its range or speed. Embraer has published that the E195-E2 burns up to 29% less fuel than previous-generation E-Jets, a significant reduction in emissions and costs that can make certain markets more viable financially. This means an airline does not necessarily need to fill an entire A320 or 737 for a route to make sense, as the E195-E2 provides a lower-capacity alternative while still delivering impressive operational characteristics.

Air Peace & Airlink: 5+ Hour E2 Flights Within Africa

Given its impressive range, airlines worldwide are using the E195-E2’s performance to its fullest. The best example in terms of regularly scheduled commercial service comes from Air Peace’s daily operation between Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) and Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in South Africa. Although Air Peace discontinued this route a few years ago, when it operated, its E2 covered 2,803 nautical miles (4,511 km). This route is even more impressive because it operates into Johannesburg, which sits nearly 6,000 feet (1,829 meters) above sea level and is known for high temperatures, both of which severely reduce aircraft performance.

Elsewhere in Africa, in October, South African airline Airlink will begin service from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) on the island nation of Mauritius. This 2,226 nautical miles (4,122 km) route will stretch over six hours on the return journey and compete directly against Air Mauritius’ daily A330 service. While the E2 is substantially smaller than the A330, the benefit of the smaller aircraft comes from the ability of Airlink to establish itself in a high-traffic leisure market like Mauritius without having to commit to larger aircraft on days with lower demand (Airlink operates the E195-E2 2x weekly while the A320 takes over on the other five days). On E2 days, Airlink also benefits from the smaller size, meaning higher load factors even during off-peak travel periods.

TUI Showcases The Benefits Of The E2’s Flexibility

One of the more interesting applications of the E195-E2, showcasing the aircraft’s flexibility, comes from TUI’s E2 operation from Antwerp, Belgium. Like Johannesburg, Antwerp is severely restricted in terms of the type and size of aircraft it can accept. With a runway of just 4,950 feet (1,509 km), nearly every major narrowbody aircraft cannot serve the airport because of its incredibly short runway.

Previously, those wanting to travel to Antwerp would only have the option to fly into the much larger Brussels Airport (BRU) and either drive or take a train to Antwerp. With the E2, however, TUI has introduced services to several holiday destinations across Europe and beyond, including Alicante and Palma de Mallorca, both in Spain. Given the E2’s smaller size and improved performance, it is able to relatively easily takeoff and land on the short runway, showing that airport accessibility does not necessarily have to come at the expense of size or range.

TUI’s operation with its 136-seat E2s therefore demonstrates that the E2’s flexibility extends beyond simple fuel savings. The E190-E2 and E195-E2 can provide airlines access to markets that might otherwise be too difficult to serve, particularly those with infrastructure or passenger limitations, a combination of factors that larger narrowbodies are often blocked by.

Porter’s North American Network Centered Around The E2

While TUI demonstrates the E2’s flexibility in terms of servicing performance-restricted airports, Canadian low-cost carrier Porter Airlines shows how the E2 family can be used as the backbone of an airline’s network. As the world’s largest E195-E2 operator, with 54 in its fleet and more on order, Porter’s fleet is heavily reliant on the E2, according to Planespotter.net . It is important to note, however, that Porter does also operate the Bombardier Dash 8-400, with 29 examples in its fleet.

Porter has used the E195-E2 to expand far beyond its traditional Canadian network. The aircraft now operates on long domestic and international routes to destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Like many other airlines that operate the E2, most of Porter’s far-flung destinations are leisure destinations, providing Canadians with connections to popular vacation spots like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Nassau, Grand Cayman, and more. As of this month, Porter’s two longest flights are from Ottawa to Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas, both 2,126 nautical miles.

The E195-E2 has specifically allowed Porter to compete directly with well-established airlines like Air Canada and WestJet. Without it, Porter would have to decide between maintaining a fleet of all ATR-72 aircraft, planes with a range of only about 1,700 nautical miles (3,148 km) and which fly much slower than jet aircraft, or expanding into the A220 or similar. With a large fleet and growing international network, the E195-E2 has effectively become Porter’s defining aircraft and is perhaps the clearest demonstration of how airlines are redefining themselves with the E2.

5+ Hours On The E2: How The E2 Slots In On Other Routes Around The World

Elsewhere, the E2 operates numerous long-distance routes, pushing the aircraft to its range limits. Wideroe, a Norwegian regional airline, used to operate the E190-E2 between Bergen, Norway, and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, a route covering approximately 2,336 nautical miles (km). This route highlighted the true benefits the E2 family can provide, as an airline that traditionally focuses on short regional hops on turboprop aircraft was able to launch a six-hour flight between two small vacation destinations without needing to purchase a larger aircraft. Even without this specific route, Wideroe’s three E2 aircraft continue to transport passengers from small Norwegian cities to major European destinations in France, Germany and Ireland.

In Asia, Hunnu Air provides another example from a very different part of the world. The Mongolian carrier has introduced the E190-E2 and E195-E2 on several international services from Ulaanbaatar, including seasonal routes that are among the longest operated by any E2 aircraft. More specifically, Hunnu Air’s seasonal Ulaanbaatar to Phu Quoc, Vietnam comes in at approximately 2,245 nautical miles (4,157 km). This five-and-a-half-hour flight continues the trend of redefining “regional” travel, with the distance covered comparable to some of the busiest US transcontinental routes, like New York to San Francisco or Los Angeles.

All of these flights, whether from Mongolia, South Africa, or Canada, show the E2 family’s incredible value. Despite its small stature, the E2 can comfortably operate routes that previously only 737s or A320s could operate. The real benefit, however, is for small regional airlines that can now expand their networks to much farther destinations without changing their business model or investing in larger aircraft. It also allows carriers to operate between far-apart secondary or even tertiary destinations with lower demand.

The Longest E2 Flight To Date: 3,400+ Nautical Miles From Brazil To South Africa

As if the E195-E2’s scheduled routes were not already impressive enough, the aircraft’s longest flight to date went even further. In September 2025, Airlink’s first E195-E2 flew about 3,400 nautical miles (6,297 km) from São José dos Campos, Brazil, across the Atlantic to Cape Town, South Africa, according to Sustainability In The Sky. This delivery flight from Embraer’s Brazilian manufacturing faculty to Airlink’s home base in South Africa stretched just under eight hours.

While this was a delivery flight rather than a scheduled passenger service, it illustrated the aircraft’s impressive capabilities. The total flown distance was roughly 400 nautical miles (741 km) beyond the E195-E2’s published maximum passenger range, showing the aircraft can operate much longer sectors under the right conditions.

In the end, the E195-E2 is not an aircraft intended to replace the Airbus A320 or 737 MAX across the board. Rather, it offers airlines a compelling alternative to other regional jet options, including the A220 family. In fact, the E195-E2 has seen tremendous success compared to the A220-100, its direct competitor. Only about 100 orders have been placed for the A220-100 compared to nearly 500 for the E195-E2, showing the value airlines truly place in Embraer’s most capable regional jet to date.
