Legacy media might not be doing all that well, but movies about it certainly seem to. Or at least, audiences were ready for more from Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci as ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ soared to the top of the box office in North America and globally.

The sequel to the 2006 hit about staff at a fashion magazine handily topped the box office this weekend with $77 million in North America and $233.6 million worldwide. For context, the original made $326.5 million globally in its lifetime, not adjusted for inflation.

What else happened at the box office this weekend?

Last weekend’s winner, music biopic ‘Michael’ continued to do well, adding $54 million for a mild 44% drop to second and $423 million so far at the global box office. It’s on track to be one of the most successful movies in its genre.
‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ landed in third place with $12.1 million. After four weekends of release, the family film has earned $402.67 million domestically and more than $900 million globally.
Sci-fi movie ‘Project Hail Mary’ continues to soar, pushed to fourth place for $8.5 million, but so far it has generated $318 million in North America and $638.4 million worldwide.

Also new to theaters was Neon’s indie hokum ‘Hokum’, which debuted in fifth place with $6.4 million from 1,855 theaters. Adam Scott stars as a writer who travels to an Irish inn to spread the ashes of his parents, unaware that the estate is haunted by an ancient evil.
And in sixth place was fellow newcomer ‘Animal Farm’, director Andy Serkis’ adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel. It didn’t fare so well, with negative reviews and a $3.3 million start at the box office.
