At the risk of feeling like an elderly Rose at the end of Titanic, it’s been a long time since Skyrim came out. The wait for The Elder Scrolls VI has been even longer. I was just 11 years old when I saw a copy of the game on PS3 and was enamored enough with the cover art to give it a try. Now, 15 years later, I’m 26 and still waiting. However, as someone who never got to play the original, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is at least giving me my Bethesda fix for the time being. And you can join me in Cyrodiil, as the game has hit its lowest price yet on PC.
Imprisoned in a cell and seemingly destined to rot, your luck changes when Emperor Uriel Septim VII arrives with his guards and uses the secret exit hidden in your jail. As luck would have it, you’ve been pardoned—lucky you. Not so lucky is the fact that the Emperor’s sons have been killed, and the assassins are after him, too. Now you’re tagging along with death chomping at your heels. Fortunately, you’re not dying today. I can’t say the same for Uriel, who gifts you the Amulet of Kings before shuffling off this mortal coil. With your freedom secured and the Emperor dead, the world seems more open than ever. That is, until the Daedra invade Tamriel.
Of course, the main quest is sitting right there, demanding that you save the world and stop the Daedra from invading through Oblivion Gates. But how can you resist helping a paranoid Wood Elf who wants you to tail people and report on their weird behavior? Or getting involved in a party where you can kill all the guests in a variety of creative ways? You could even hunt them down one by one. It’s up to you. The Daedra may be taking over the world, but I’m busy. Can they take a rain check?
The remaster isn’t just a quick visual touch-up being sold at full price. The graphics have been enhanced across the board, bringing the game closer to modern standards while remaining faithful to the 2006 classic. It also includes the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions, making this the complete Cyrodiil experience. As someone who never got to enjoy Oblivion when it was first released, it was great to finally play it—and enjoy a new Elder Scrolls game (to me). Bethesda, where’s the sixth entry?
Right now, you can grab The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered for just $31.49 / £31.49 at Fanatical, getting a Steam key at 37% off. That’s lower than the game’s previous lowest price on Steam. Considering we’ve been waiting nearly two decades since Oblivion’s original release for a new Elder Scrolls game—and over a decade since Skyrim—what else have you got to play? Don’t you dare look at the upcoming games and tell me I’m wrong.
