If you’ve been on BeautyTok in the last year, you’ve likely witnessed the viral takeover of fragrance. This isn’t to say that perfumes, colognes, body mists, and more haven’t stood on their own for decades—in fact, your childhood introduction to beauty might have even been the glass perfume bottle on your grandmother’s vanity. That said, there’s no denying the internet’s fascination with fragrance today. Thanks to TikTok, luxury brands like Maison Francis Kurkdjian have become household names (everyone knows Baccarat Rouge 540 by now), shoppers are buying hair perfumes in droves, and Gen A teenagers have even come up with a new word for fragrance layering: smellmaxxing. One of the best ways to do it? With a fragrance primer, of course.
What Are Fragrance Primers?
You can think of fragrance primer as the base coat of your manicure: the first layer of a process to ensure long-lasting results. “A fragrance primer anchors scent on the skin so your perfume lasts longer and performs better throughout the day,” says Jeniece Trizzino, VP of innovation and product at Scentbird. But why does perfume disappear so quickly without a primer?
“Dry skin absorbs perfume oil and causes it to dissipate faster, while moisturized skin creates a base that perfume oil can cling to,” she answers. The expert goes on to explain that fragrance primers are made with “slow-evaporating ingredients” that interact with the molecules of your perfume, encouraging slower release, and thus longer wear.
Some primers are intentionally unscented—affixing the perfume’s notes to your skin via a moisturizing base—while others are fragranced to intensify the projection and longevity of a perfume with similar notes. “They’re especially useful with lighter, fleeting scents since citrus, aquatic, or airy florals benefit most from a slower release,” she adds.
Below, we rounded up the very best fragrance primers you can find in 2026. From fancy fragrance essences meant to boost the complexity of your perfume to a drugstore product you probably have in your bathroom right now, here’s how you can get the most out of your favorite fragrances.
The Best Fragrance Primers of 2026, at a Glance
Best Overall: Future Society Optimal Habitat Fragrance-Enhancing Primer
Future Society
Optimal Habitat Fragrance-Enhancing Primer
Pros: Extended wear time for about two hours longer than usual, hydrating formula, odorless
Cons: Doesn’t preserve fragrance up to 24 hours
When it comes to primers, Future Society’s Optimal Habitat elixir is one of the most popular—and for good reason. It brings even the faintest of scents to life for much longer than usual (body mists had surprising staying power when beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock tested them with this primer), especially when it came to fresher, lighter fragrances, as these tend to dissipate faster. The primer itself is odorless, so it won’t taint your favorite scent, and it’s made with hydrators like squalane and glycerin plus a handful of marine ingredients that help maintain the pH level of your skin for longer, richer wear. No, it didn’t offer 24-hour wear as promised, but it did give us at least two extra hours of wear than we normally would have gotten.
Customer review: “I have several fragrances that don’t last long and this helps. It especially let’s the middle notes linger before the full dry down.”
Best Enhancer: D.S. & Durga I Don’t Know What Eau de Parfum
D.S. & Durga
I Don’t Know What Eau de Parfum
Pros: Enhances your favorite scent, blends fragrance families together
Cons: Quite expensive
If Future Society’s primer is the base before foundation, then this transparent scent from D.S. & Durga is the blending brush for a complicated array of eye shadows. This pick isn’t a primer per se, but it is proven to enhance the scent you’re wearing thanks to a sheer wash of vetiver acetate, ambrox super, and bergamot essence. These barely-there notes don’t change the scent of your fragrance, but a few spritzes on top of your favorite perfume will intensify them and make everything a bit more harmonious. (This is especially true if you’re layering two scents that don’t necessarily have the same fragrance composition, but you want to wear them simultaneously. It’s a glossy top coat.)
Customer review: “While this says fragrance enhancer, you can definitely use this on its own. The bergamot blends beautifully with the vetiver for a sultry, somewhat unisex scent, and it lasts sooo long. I put this on last night just to see how it reacted to my skin’s pH, then went to a hot yoga class in the morning, and could smell it 16 hours later after sleeping and sweating. Incredible.”
Best Customizable: No Makeup Makeup No Fragrance Fragrance Skin-Responsive Essence
No Makeup Makeup
No Fragrance Fragrance Skin-Responsive Essence
Pros: Safe for sensitive skin, changes with body temperature throughout the day
Cons: Could affect your main perfume if the notes change with your body temperature to a note that doesn’t jive
It’s in the name: This is a “no-fragrance fragrance.” However, that doesn’t mean that it smells like nothing, or that it’s for people who want to smell like they’re not wearing perfume. (Okay, it’s a little bit like the last part.) But still, this scent—an “essence” concocted with FlexScent technology that adapts to your body temperature throughout the day and adjusts to emit earthy, floral, musky, or fruity notes—is meant to be as subtle, clean, and skin-like as they come. It’s also safe for sensitive skin thanks to Givaudan’s My Z-Biome technology, so you can absolutely douse yourself in it without overpowering passersby (or the scent you’re already wearing). It brings your skin to life, especially with your favorite perfume layered underneath or on top.
Customer review: “I have asthma and have to choose fragrance very carefully. This one does not trigger my asthma. It is a light fragrance and dissipates in about 4 hours. I’ve gotten several compliments when wearing it. [I] recommend it.”
Best for Layering: Dedcool Milk Layering + Enhancer Fragrance
DedCool
Milk Layering + Enhancer Fragrance
Pros: Skin-like scent, sheer enough to layer on top or as a base
Cons: Doesn’t prolong scent for as long as Future Society’s
Scent-stacking is in, and this option from Dedcool is the way to go if you want to prolong the shelf life of your early morning spritzes. With key notes of bergamot, white musk, and amber, this sheer scent teeters between floral and musky to create a familiar skin scent that smells like you, just better. It makes for a great deepening agent for your favorite fragrance and sits beautifully on top of most scents, though I vouch for its efficacy as a base layer. Try wetting the skin with a few spritzes in a concentrated area, letting it dry for 30 seconds, then following up with your favorite scent for longer wear thanks to the moisturized skin.
Customer review: “This is a beautifully executed musk that feels truly universal. While I typically avoid musk-forward fragrances due to their tendency to feel overwhelming, this one is exceptionally well-balanced. It offers complete versatility, allowing you to customize your layers and create a scent that feels intimate and uniquely personal. On its own, it wears as a clean, serene skin scent—effortless and comforting. When layered, it elevates darker compositions, grounds lighter, airier fragrances, and adds a warm, cozy depth that feels especially fitting for the holiday season.”
Best Hydrating: House of Bō Nourishing Parfum Primer
House of Bō
Nourishing Parfum Primer
Pros: Nourishes the skin, extends longevity of scent
Cons: None I can think of
Remember when Trizzino said that moisturized skin holds onto scent molecules better than dry? Enter: House of Bō’s Nourishing Parfum Primer, a hydrating mist that enriches the skin with antioxidants, vitamin E, and hyaluronic acid to provide better grip and balance your skin’s pH in preparation for perfume. Its main purpose is to give your barrier something with slip so your favorite scent can take hold and stay there, and that’s exactly what this base layer does. “The mechanism is simple: hydrated, pH-balanced skin slows the evaporation of fragrance molecules, which means your top notes linger longer, your heart notes bloom more fully, and your base notes anchor deeper,” Trizzino adds.
Best Luxury: Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Fragrance Primer
CHANEL
Coco Mademoiselle Fragrance Primer
Pros: Works with all Coco Mademoiselle fragrances, moisturizes skin
Cons: On the expensive side
If you are devoted to Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle and wish it had more staying power, you’re in luck—someone at the legendary fashion house clearly felt the same. This fragrance primer is specifically designed to enhance, boost, and prolong the scent of any Coco Mademoiselle fragrance via a water-based mist that enhances the sillage. Its notes, a combination of, jasmine, rose accord, and orange, blend beautifully with any of the Mademoiselle line without muddying the original scents. Trés chic, non?
Customer review: “Can be worn alone as a lighter version or layered. I love it!”
Best Budget: Vaseline Petroleum Jelly
Pros: Low-priced, easy to obtain, you likely already own, versatile
Cons: Not as refined as the other options, doesn’t add anything to the scent
One of the simplest (and most affordable!) ways to get stronger, more long-lasting wear out of your favorite perfume is by slathering your preferred areas of application—whether it be behind the ears, on the neck, the inside of the wrist, etcetera—with a light layer of Vaseline petroleum jelly before spraying your fragrance directly on top. The occlusive elements within the petroleum jelly will trap the scent, sustaining longer wear, and you can even spray a bit of your favorite perfume into a small amount of Vaseline to create a solid perfume. Low-priced and totally effective.
What to Look For in a Fragrance Primer
- Hydration: Trizzino explains that all fragrance primers are essentially skincare hybrids, and the paramount characteristic among them all is hydration. “The key ingredients are moisturizing agents like glycerin, squalane, and ceramides, which hydrate the skin and create a surface that perfume molecules can grip onto rather than evaporate from,” she explains.
- pH-balancing ingredients: This is more of a nice-to-have, but it makes all the difference. “More sophisticated formulas also include peptides and pH-balancing acids like arginine and citric acid, because skin with a higher, more alkaline pH actually retains fragrance less effectively,” Trizzino adds. “Hard water, environment, and even diet can push your skin’s pH in the wrong direction, so a primer quietly corrects that before you ever apply your scent.”
- Longevity: This one’s obvious. Trizzino explains that the extra wear time a primer can offer depends on the fragrance’s interaction with your skin chemistry. “Any brand that promises an exact number should be taken with a grain of salt,” she advises. “That said, clinical testing on some of the leading primers on the market has shown wear time roughly doubling, with some users reporting fragrance lasting 16 hours compared to 6 without it,” she adds. “For lighter, more fleeting scents especially, the difference can be striking.” She advises you to think of these products as less of a guarantee and more like guard rails: giving the perfume the best environment to perform in.
What else can you use as a fragrance primer?
If you don’t want to go for a fragrance primer just yet, Trizzino recommends applying an unscented body lotion to the area of skin you plan to apply perfume to before spritzing. Just let it sit for a few minutes before spraying. “It won’t match the performance of a dedicated primer, but it gets you most of the way there for free,” she explains. “The principle is identical: hydrated skin holds scent longer, and for someone just building their fragrance routine, it’s the perfect starting point.”
