
Not every US military installation looks like a typical airport, with a terminal, a couple of runways, and a fence line a mile or two around the perimeter. Some airbases are more like small, self-contained cities, while others sprawl across hundreds of thousands of acres of desert, coastline, or forest because their mission leaves no other option. Flight testing, live weapons development, and experimental aviation all require enormous safety buffers, dedicated test corridors, and long runways that have very little to do with how many people work there or how many aircraft sit on the ramp.
Ranking installations strictly by land area produces a very different list than ranking by personnel, aircraft, or budget, and it says a lot about what each base actually does day to day. To keep the comparison apples-to-apples, this list uses each installation’s official acreage, as reported by its owning service, rather than the size of an adjacent test range, a controlled airspace block, or an entire multi-installation complex that happens to share a name.
For comparison, Travis Air Force Base, one of the Air Force’s busiest airlift hubs, covers just 6,258 acres (2,533 hectares), which shows how differently these six installations are built compared with a conventional operational base moving cargo and passengers around the world. Acreage on this list also correlates poorly with population or budget: some of the country’s biggest bases by land area support only a few thousand personnel, while installations with tens of thousands of people on base can be a fraction of the size. Kirtland Air Force Base
44,052 acres (17,825 hectares) and an outsized nuclear mission
Kirtland Air Force Base sits on the southeastern edge of Albuquerque, New Mexico, sharing its runway complex with Albuquerque International Sunport Airport (ABQ). According to Kirtland’s environmental noise study, the installation covers about 51,585 acres (20,872 hectares) in total, of which roughly 44,052 acres (17,825 hectares) fall under direct United States Air Force control, with the remainder shared with other federal agencies and the city of Albuquerque. That total makes Kirtland the smallest of the six installations on this list, though it still dwarfs a typical civilian airport several times over.
What Kirtland lacks in a single sprawling range, it makes up for in specialized, high-security real estate. The base hosts Air Force Global Strike Command’s nuclear weapons and logistics functions, the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Directed Energy and Space Vehicles Directorates, and an underground munitions storage complex built into the surrounding volcanic mesas, alongside neighboring Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory operations.
Kirtland ranks sixth because its footprint, while enormous by civilian standards, is the smallest of the six on this list. Holloman Air Force Base
Operational flying, formal training, and a world-class test track over 59,639 acres (24,131 hectares)
Holloman Air Force Base(HMN) sits just west of Alamogordo, New Mexico, on the edge of the Tularosa Basin, next to White Sands Missile Range and the gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park. Official Air Force base data puts the installation’s land area at approximately 59,639 acres (24,131 hectares).
The base blends operational flying with test and training missions rather than specializing in just one. It hosts the 49th Wing’s General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper training squadrons, while its history includes a German Air ForcePanavia Tornado training detachment, operational until 2019, and the Holloman High-Speed Test Track, a rail system used to test ejection seats, sensors, and hardened materials at extreme speeds, all while running everyday flying operations from its main airfield. That combination of live flying, formal training, and dedicated test infrastructure on a single installation is unusual; most bases this size specialize in just one of those roles.
Holloman ranks fifth because its acreage has to accommodate three jobs at once: remote low-level training corridors for fighter and drone operations, a dedicated test-track corridor kept clear of obstructions for miles, and enough separation from Alamogordo to safely handle experimental hardware, all without the vast dedicated weapons ranges that push China Lake or Eglin so much higher on this list.

Vandenberg Space Force Base
99,600 acres (40,300 hectares) of coastal buffer zone and rocket launches
Vandenberg Space Force Base (VBG) occupies a stretch of California’s Central Coast near Lompoc, with roughly 35 miles of Pacific shoreline inside its boundary. Base planning and airport-safety documentation put its land area at approximately 99,600 acres (40,300 hectares). Originally Vandenberg Air Force Base, the installation transferred to the newly formed US Space Force in 2021, though it still supports airlift, helicopter, and range-safety flights from its own runway, and its 30th Space Wing heritage remains visible in the base’s layout and infrastructure.
Unlike a conventional flying base, most of Vandenberg’s acreage exists as undeveloped land rather than built infrastructure. It functions as the launch site for military, NASA, and commercial polar-orbit missions, including regular SpaceX Falcon 9 flights, so the ground surrounding each pad has to stay clear as an impact and debris safety buffer, and long sections of coastline are preserved for habitat protection.
Vandenberg lands in fourth place because rocket launches, unlike routine flying operations, require wide exclusion zones on every side of a pad in case of an in-flight failure. Edwards Air Force Base
The nation’s proving ground for experimental aircraft measures 308,000 acres (124,600 hectares)
Edwards Air Force Base (EDW) occupies the western Mojave Desert of California, built around Rogers Dry Lake, a hard-packed lakebed that functions as a natural extension of the base’s paved runways. Air Force environmental assessment documentation lists the installation’s size at approximately 308,000 acres (124,600 hectares), making it one of the Department of the Air Force’s largest bases.
Edwards is home to the Air Force Test Center, the 412th Test Wing, and NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center.
It’s where Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier by flying the Bell X-1 in 1947, and it later served as a landing site for the Space Shuttle whenever weather at Kennedy Space Center ruled out a landing in Florida. Eglin Air Force Base
With an area of 464,000 acres (187,800 hectares), it is the largest Air Force installation in the world
Eglin Air Force Baseshares its territory with civil Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) as it spreads across Florida’s western Panhandle around Choctawhatchee Bay, near Valparaiso and Fort Walton Beach. Air Force materials describe it as the service’s largest installation by land area, covering more than 464,000 acres (187,800 hectares), an area larger than the state of Rhode Island.
Established in 1935, Eglin grew from a training field into the Air Force’s primary center for weapons, munitions, and guidance-system testing. It’s home to the 96th Test Wing, Lockheed MartinF-35A Lightning II training squadrons, an Air Force Special Operations Command reserve wing, and research into hypersonic and military applications of artificial intelligence, supporting close to 20,000 military, civilian, and contractor personnel. Eglin also controls extensive water and airspace ranges over the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) for munitions and hypersonic testing, though those areas are managed separately from the installation’s own land acreage.
Eglin ranks second because live weapons testing needs enormous safety separation between test ranges, impact areas, and the surrounding community, with buffer zones measured in tens of thousands of acres rather than hundreds. Only the US Navy‘s China Lake, built for a similar mission on an even larger scale, sits above it.

Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake
The Navy’s largest landholding, and the biggest base on this list at 1.1 million acres (445,000 hectares)
Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake spans Kern, San Bernardino, and Inyo counties in California’s western Mojave Desert. The Navy’s official overview of the installation puts its total land area, including its North and South Ranges and main site, at approximately 1.1 million acres, or roughly 445,000 hectares, bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island and the Navy’s largest single landholding anywhere in the world.
The installation is home to the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, which researches, develops, and tests naval air-launched weapons systems, from missiles to electronic-warfare equipment. Test squadrons VX-9 and VX-31 fly the F/A-18, F-35C, and other Navy aircraft out of China Lake, and by most estimates, roughly 95 percent of the base’s land remains undeveloped desert. A 7.1-magnitude earthquake centered on the installation in July 2019 damaged thousands of structures, underscoring just how much infrastructure sits across such a remote and seismically active stretch of the Mojave.
China Lake tops this list because its mission, developing and live-testing naval air weapons, demands standoff distances measured in dozens of miles rather than acres, spread across two enormous ranges divided by a single highway. At roughly two and a half times the size of Eglin, it isn’t just the largest Navy air base in the country; it’s the largest military air installation of any branch, by land area, in the United States.
