Teen bit by shark while boating with father off Texas coast

A 17-year-old boy was bitten by a shark on Monday afternoon while boating with his father off the coast of Galveston, Texas.

The teen was said to be conscious and alert and was taken to the hospital, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement. Additional details were not immediately released.

The boat, carrying three people, was traveling to Galveston’s Yacht Basin when the incident occurred.

Authorities were called after the boat became disabled in the water.

The Coast Guard said the boy’s father was able to provide a tourniquet until help arrived.

The boat the teen was on may have gone several hours offshore before turning back to the yacht basin, NBC affiliate KPRC in Houston reported.

The 17-year-old was transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston for treatment, KPRC reported.
