Today, we’re launching Blood and Brine, the expansion for Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter. Available now as a free update for all players on XBOX Series X|S and XBOX One, this new post-game adventure takes Arlo away from the frozen northern wastes and into the unfamiliar waters of Hardshell Brook.
The expansion adds 11 full quests, 10 new bosses, nine armor sets, new original music, and a fishing mechanic featuring 32 aquatic creatures to discover. We have also joined forces with several fellow independent studios to introduce a collection of crossover armor inspired by some of our favorite indie games.
Blood and Brine takes place after the main campaign, so you will need to complete Arlo’s original adventure before setting sail.
A New Tide of Bloodshed
Arlo has faced giant beasts, bloodthirsty bats, and many other horrors during his campaign across the Ratdom. His latest adventure begins with something a little less threatening: two shipwrecked sailors asking for help building an aquarium.
After their vessel is destroyed, sailors Jaimie and Sam arrive with an unusual plan. By creating an aquarium filled with rare aquatic life, they hope to attract enough visitors to fund the repairs to their ship.
Naturally, they need somebody brave enough to catch the creatures.
Arlo must travel to Hardshell Brook, cast his line into its dangerous waters, and build an increasingly unusual collection of fish and other marine life. As the aquarium begins to grow, however, questions start to surface about the sailors’ story – and what really happened to them at sea.
Fishing introduces a very different pace to Arlo’s adventure, but this is still Tails of Iron. You should never assume that something is harmless simply because it lives underwater.
Explore Hardshell Brook
Blood and Brine introduces Hardshell Brook, a new coastal region with its own characters, enemies, quests, and secrets.
While the area may appear calmer than the snow-ravaged wastes Arlo has previously explored, danger is never far away. Players will encounter new threats beneath the waves and take part in ship arena battles that bring combat onto the open water.
Across the expansion’s 11 quests, Arlo will face 10 new bosses, ranging from creatures pulled from the depths to formidable enemies with their own attack patterns and challenges to overcome.
The expansion also includes nine new armor sets, giving you more ways to prepare Arlo for the battles waiting along the coast.
Indie Legends Enter the Ratdom
As a small independent studio ourselves, we have always been inspired by the creativity and imagination found throughout the indie game community.
For Blood and Brine, we wanted to celebrate some of those games by reimagining their heroes within the hand-drawn medieval world of Tails of Iron 2.
The expansion includes crossover armor inspired by:
- The Penitent One from Blasphemous
- The Lamb from Cult of the Lamb
- Dave from DAVE THE DIVER
- The Crow from Death’s Door
- Will from Moonlighter
Each set has been redrawn in our distinctive storybook style and adapted to fit Arlo’s journey through the Ratdom. Seeing these familiar designs transformed into armor for a battle-hardened rat has been one of the most enjoyable parts of creating the expansion.

Working with United Label, we knew we wanted to give the community a substantial new story to experience rather than a small collection of extras. What began as another adventure for Arlo grew into a celebration of independent games, filled with new quests, characters, bosses, music, armor, and an entirely new mechanic.
We hope returning players enjoy discovering what is waiting along the shores of Hardshell Brook – and that the journey gives new players another reason to begin Arlo’s campaign.
