Sussex: Paul Farbrace to remain at club in director of cricket role

Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace will switch roles to become the cash-strapped club’s director of cricket from November.

Farbrace had previously announced he would step down from his current role with the club but will now take up his new job part-time.

The move will allow financially stricken Sussex time to appoint his successor.

“When I announced earlier this season I would be stepping down as head coach, I genuinely believed it was the right decision, and I still do,” former England assistant coach Farbrace told Sussex’s website., external

“What has changed is the opportunity to continue helping Sussex Cricket in a different role.

“I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to this group of players or to everything we’ve worked so hard to build together. This role allows me to continue supporting the players and staff across the club as we work towards the goals we all want to achieve.”

The news will come as a huge relief to Sussex, who have faced serious off-field issues, which Farbrace previously called “hard to deal with”.

The club posted a £1.3m loss in 2025, and up to eight players are expected to depart, in part due to restrictions due to a salary cap in place until 2028.

They were hit with a 12-point deduction ahead of this season’s County Championship for “sustained operating losses” and given a one-point deduction for both the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup.

Paceman Henry Crocombe, who was called into the England Test squad during the recent series against New Zealand, has agreed to join Surrey at the end of the season and bowling all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice will play for Hampshire in 2027 after his contract at Hove expires.
