Subnautica 2’s early access has chased a campervanning game about starting fires and hacking PCs into an earlier release

As you’ve probably heard by now, Subnautica 2 is releasing in early access on May 14th. Unknown Worlds have packed up all of their leviathans and everything. Cool. Unless you’re planning to launch a campervanning game that same day. Square Glade Games have decided they’d rather not.

Cue the release date of Outbound being moved up to May 11th pretty much as soon as Subnautica 2 laid claim to the 14th. Even though we are very hyped for their game and big fans of the franchise, we think that it is best to not compete with such an highly anticipated title on that day,” Square Glade wrote in their announcement that the Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox versions of the game will now arrive on the 11th. “We need to dodge the Leviathan, which means that you can start your road trip on earlier!”

This also means the demo that’s been chilling on Outbound’s Steam page for a little while now will be pulled offline on May 8th. It’s well worth giving that demo a go if you’re up for some chill wilderness roaming and gentle survival-based crafting. I did for a feature in which I compared it to a Cyberunk 2077 campervan mod a back in February and enjoyed what I played. Here’s a snippet from the Outbound bit of that gonzo adventure:

Here’s some wood, scrap metal, and rubbish to recycle. Feed the latter into this recycling machine I’ve just built inside our van, and boom, a ticket that’ll give me the blueprint for a handy new skill if I take it to that radio tower over there. No, I’m not sure why all of the local telecommunications posts are dishing out info about making axes and watering cans to hapless campers, but I’m sure it’s for the greater good. Speaking of axes, I’m going to use the one I’ve just made on some logs, so we can go from desperately needing more wood to having so much wood we have to shove it all in the van’s maw in order to avoid being rooted to the ground. Right, time to move on and see if we can climb up to that hilltop ranger station. What do you mean ‘give me five minutes, I’ve just built a three-legged camping stool’?

The game subsequently had me break into that ranger station’s PC, which seems like crime, but there were no cops around, so it went fine.
