“Thirty-five years ago today, Ukraine’s Parliament proclaimed the country’s independence. That historic decision marked the beginning of a new chapter for Ukraine – one defined by freedom, democracy, and self-determination.

Canada was the first Western nation to recognise Ukraine’s independence, deepening a friendship that has grown into an enduring bond between our nations. That bond is strengthened by the more than 1.4 million Canadians of Ukrainian descent.

As we mark the anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, Canada reaffirms our steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and freedom.

Ukraine’s future belongs to the Ukrainian people alone. Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine is an attempt to change that fact.

A just and lasting peace for Ukraine will only come through strength. That is why Canada joined other nations in imposing one of the world’s most comprehensive sanctions regimes, targeting more than 3,500 Russian individuals and entities and over 700 vessels.

While we weaken Russia, we strengthen Ukraine. This year alone, Canada committed more than $2 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. We have extended Operation UNIFIER to continue strengthening Ukraine’s military and bolster its long-term defence capabilities. Earlier today, Canada met with allies and partners in the Coalition of the Willing to reaffirm our shared commitment to supporting Ukraine and helping build the conditions for a just and lasting peace.

Today, I join Ukrainians in Canada and around the world in celebrating Ukrainian Independence Day. As we did in 1991, Canada stands unwavering in our commitment to help Ukraine protect its freedom, restore its territorial integrity, and rebuild a stronger future.
