Statement by Minister Anand on the situation in Lebanon

April 9, 2026 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the situation in Lebanon:

“The respect and protection of civilians are non-negotiable and required under international law. We thus call on Israel to respect Lebanon’s territorial integrity and for Hezbollah to immediately disarm and implement decisions issued by the Government of Lebanon. Furthermore, we call on Israel and Hezbollah to implement and adhere to a permanent ceasefire.

“We strongly condemn the airstrikes launched by Israel across Lebanon, including in Beirut, which killed civilians and targeted civilian infrastructure. At the same time, we strongly condemn Hezbollah’s indiscriminate attacks against Israel and its people.

“Canada firmly supports the Lebanese government’s efforts to restore and exercise full state authority, including through the disarmament of Hezbollah, a listed terrorist organization in Canada, and to advance a credible and durable diplomatic solution. Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty must be respected.”
