Since its announcement, every update on Spaceballs: The New One has been a piece of parody in itself. The cast reveal spoofed The Force Awakens‘ cast photo. The reveal that the sequel to the 1987 original would not, in fact, be titled Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money came with a video of Mel Brooks saying he’d already found the money. Now Amazon MGM Studios has released the film’s official description, and it is as funny as you’d expect.
While Spaceballs: The New One isn’t set to be released in theaters until April 23, 2027, Amazon MGM is holding a Hall H panel for the film at San Diego Comic-Con next weekend. The description has been revealed in preparation for that panel. Here it is:
Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned! Forty years after the events of the first Spaceballs, fifty years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and one year after the events of The Devil Wears Prada 2, the galaxy is once again under threat. A threat so evil, so unstoppable, so completely lacking in any original ideas, that it has vowed to bring back the past… every last bit of it.
With Lone Starr in hiding, Queen Vespa on the throne, and the Schwartz stretched thinner than a franchise releasing TV episodes theatrically, the only hope for the galaxy is Vespa’s undisciplined son, Prince Starburst, and a mysterious Palace advisor named Destiny. Together, they must find Lone Starr, Yogurt, and any other iconic legacy characters fans are demanding before they discover the hard way that, while some threats you can fight, the reboot is not one of them.
From the opening line, Spaceballs: The New One‘s description takes aim at Disney’s era of Star Wars. 2019’s Rise of Skywalker infamously included the line “Somehow, Palpatine returned,” It quickly became a meme that stood in for every other complaint fans had with the conclusion to the sequel trilogy of films. Fans have been open, and incredibly vocal, about their dissatisfaction with the Disney era’s handling of the galaxy far, far away. While there have been some major wins, such as the Disney Plus series Andor, it feels like they are few and far between. Spaceballs: The New One leverages this easy target to build excitement and show that, even before release, the film’s parody will live up to its predecessor. Perhaps, fans will also learn about just how Dark Helmet returned in a Fortnite event.
Amazon MGM Studios also released a trailer for Spaceballs: The New One alongside the description. This, too, is a joke. A beloved bit in Spaceballs involves henchmen using giant literal hair combs to comb a dessert. The soldiers who didn’t have much luck finding anything in that film are here again, writing out the number two using a comb.
Spaceballs: The New One will see the return of Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, and Mel Brooks. They will be joined by a supporting cast that includes Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman (who will play his real father’s on-screen son). Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) will direct.
