Skinny Jeans Are Back on Runways, but Not Yet in Mainstream

Is the consumer ready to shimmy back into skinny jeans, which made a big splash during the men’s spring 2027 shows in Europe?

Fashionistas are likely to be early adopters, but probably not the rank-and-file, according to Tagwalk and Heuritech, which mined their data for WWD and read the tea leaves.

Tagwalk registered a 163 percent increase in the skinny jeans tag for spring 2027 versus the year-ago season, interest in the style initially sparked by Jonathan Anderson in his sophomore men’s show for Dior for fall 2026.

Alexandra Van Houtte, chief executive officer of Tagwalk, listed Prada, Celine and Dior as the three top brands doing skinny jeans for spring 2027, “which is interesting because they also influence a lot of womenswear premium brands.”

Indeed, she is predicting a 683 percent increase in womenswear, “linked to the Y2K era but also very linked to the sudden increase in frayed denim, bleached denim and more body-con silhouettes,” Van Houtte said.

Heuritech’s Noémie Voyer, fashion curation manager and lead of fashion expertise, agreed slimness “feels directional again” and skinny jeans and ultra-slim silhouettes are attracting renewed attention.

However, she does not expect mainstream adoption anytime soon, given that Heuritech considers skinny jeans a “consistent decliner,” forecast to fall another 22 percent in Europe next year. (Its data is based on real-world images of what consumers are actually wearing and forecasts future adoption.)

“The skinny jeans comeback is happening in a much more fragmented denim landscape, where baggy, wide-leg, straight, boot cut, barrel and slim silhouettes can coexist,” Voyer said, characterizing the style as less of a mass uniform and more of “a fashion statement for the edgiest cohort.”

In addition, Voyer expects new generations to style skinny jeans in a more “subcultural way… drawing on Hedi Slimane-era rock rather than the generic mass-market skinny jeans of the 2010s.”

Heuritech pointed to more than 300,000 recent posts on social media with the hashtags #hediboys and #hedislimane as a reaffirmation of interest in the skinny aesthetic.

“I expect the comeback to happen first through straight-slim fits,” Voyer said. “The new skinny fit is likely to feel more tailored and intentional than the 2010s version.”

Heuritech tracks regional differences, noting that Asian markets have historically been more receptive to “leaner, more precise silhouettes,” and that European markets have strong connections to designer menswear, which are leading the skinny charge.

North America is more complicated, according to Voyer.

“Relaxed, straight and wide denim gained considerable momentum during and after the pandemic. So skinny jeans are returning into a market where consumers now have far more accepted jeans alternatives,” she cautioned.
