Sick of rage quitters? This indie dev has created a very funny answer to those inclined to tilt (and turn)

It’s no secret that rage quitting is one of the most frustrating aspects of online gaming. Thankfully, one indie game developer is currently hard at work on a fun idea that could soften the blow of sudden disconnects.

Khao Mortadios is the name of this developer from Astrobard Games, who posted a quick video of their upcoming indie game Generic Fighter Maybe on social media. This video shows something all fighting game fans will be familiar with: a lengthy game-winning combo resulting in an annoying rage quit right before the round is won.

Everyone hates it when their opponent just leaves the game before it’s over, so I’ve been trying to find ways to soften the blow a little bit. #fightinggame #gamemaker #indiedev

However, rather than a boring disconnect screen or a freeze, this rage quit results in the losing player’s character running towards a window with a goofy smile on their face, before leaping through the glass. The clip concludes with “your opponent has left the game’ popping up front and centre.

This sort of special rage quit finisher has been tried before, although it’s typically leaned more towards the gorier side of things rather than the comedic. In the Mortal Kombat series, rage quits have been punished with a sudden head explosion, which offers ample catharsis, yes, though arguably lacks some crucial humour.

Rage quitting itself has been around for a while, and remains a thorn in the side of one-versus-one multiplayer gaming. It was only earlier this month that the Invincible Vs beta was plagued with rage quitters who couldn’t hold their own, even in a limited-time version of the game where wins and losses didn’t matter. Developers of fighting games, and other genres with a similar competitive component, have had to invest time in creating powerful systems that punish rage quitters for many years now.

I, for one, prefer the Generic Fighter Maybe approach. Rage quitters are bozos and anything that highlights the hilarity of someone angrily leaving a video game mid-match is worthy of applause.
