A 39-year-old man killed five people, and then himself, in a series of shootings across Missaukee County, Mich., on Friday, according to the Michigan State Police.

A motive for the shootings was not immediately known.

The authorities found the gunman, Chad Hickman, dead in a wooded area near Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township, officials said.

State troopers were called to a home in Lake Township at 11:40 a.m. for a report of a person who had been shot.

The troopers found three people dead and another person who was critically injured. That person was taken to a hospital.

Mr. Hickman fled the scene before troopers arrived, leading to a “large-scale” manhunt, the State Police said.

During the search, troopers found another person dead inside a home in Missaukee County, which is about 120 miles north of Grand Rapids.

A search turned up Mr. Hickman’s vehicle near woods near Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township.

The authorities continued searching the area until they found Mr. Hickman and another person dead in the woods.

The authorities have yet to release any information about the victims.

“This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved,” said Lt. Ashley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Michigan State Police’s Seventh District. “We remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as new information becomes available.”
