Scrapped Star Wars: Magellan Action RPG Let You Play as a Jedi or Mandalorian

Footage has emerged of Star Wars: Magellan, a scrapped action RPG that let you play as either a Jedi or Mandalorian.

MP1st has published the first publicly-seen artwork and gameplay of Magellan, sourced from the portfolio of an artist who worked on the project at the now-shuttered Echtra Games.

Based in San Francisco until its closure last year, Echtra was originally set up by former Blizzard developers and ultimately launched Torchlight 3 in 2020. The company was then bought by Zynga, though never shipped another project. Now, it’s been revealed that the studio had been building Star Wars: Magellan, another Star Wars project set to be published by Zynga following its arena shooter Star Wars Hunters.

Magellan looks to have had a more ambitions than Hunters, with descriptions of at least two playable character classes, an NPC bond system to unlock further interaction with companions, and “shoot and loot” gameplay. Footage shows a caped Mandalorian fighter nicknamed Triggerman and a Twi’lek Jedi, each of which are referred to on-screen as “The Exiled Mandalorian” and “The Hunted Jedi”.

Gameplay shows the Jedi class able to repel a cloud of laser fire using their lightsabre, and push enemies backwards using Force powers. The Mandalorian character, meanwhile, can leap and hover short distances with their jetpack, and fire off a flamethrower. Enemies include Stormtroopers, droids and hulking mechs. And yes, there are red explodable barrels.

Alas, Magellan looks to have been permanently canned when Zynga shut down Echtra last year — leaving the game rusting in the garbage disposal of other canceled Star Wars games such as Project Ragtag, Star Wars 1313, Battlefront 3, and many more.

At least there’s still more to look forward to elsewhere in the Star Wars galaxy, including a promising-looking second season of Ahsoka, and the Ryan Gosling-fronted Star Wars: Starfighter, both due for launch next year.
