Schiaparelli’s First U.S. Stand-alone Boutique to Open at South Coast Plaza in California

Maison Schiaparelli will open a store at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif., marking the brand’s debut on the West Coast and its first stand-alone boutique in the U.S.

The 2,244-square-foot space is slated to open this fall on Level 2, Nordstrom wing.

Designed in tandem with Schiaparelli’s creative director Daniel Roseberry and Stockholm-based architecture studio Halleroed, the boutique looks to bring the spirit of the brand’s famed salons at 21 Place Vendôme in Paris to California through the company’s latest retail concept. The space is conceived as an intimate, apartment-like destination, uniting craftsmanship with Surrealist fantasy. It will invite visitors into a sequence of immersive rooms where ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes and bijoux will be presented in a uniquely Schiaparelli universe.

South Coast Plaza, which has a highly affluent clientele, is home to such retailers as Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Loewe, Harry Winston, Celine, Maison Margiela, Gucci, Cartier, Rolex and Graff. Last month, Tiffany, which first opened its South Coast Plaza store in 1988, moved to a significantly larger and renovated flagship location.

Roseberry has designed Schiaparelli since 2019 and his creations have been worn by such celebrities as Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Bella Hadid and Zendaya. During his tenure, Roseberry has revived some of the house’s most influential codes while paying homage to Elsa Schiaparelli’s love of Surrealism. Simultaneously, he has subverted many of these codes, with his frequent use of gold jewelry and metalwork, upcycled denim and molded leather and metal breastplates and anatomical parts.

Echoing the house’s Parisian salons, the Schiaparelli boutique will feature warm golden tones, lacquered wood, sculptural marble, mirrored surfaces and signature architectural details. Throughout the shop, Schiaparelli’s iconic codes, including the Keyhole, Padlock, Face and Eye, will appear as subtle motifs woven into the architecture.

“We are immensely proud to open a new chapter for Schiaparelli at South Coast Plaza, one of the world’s most respected luxury destinations,” said Delphine Bellini, chief executive officer of Schiaparelli. “The long-term vision and unwavering commitment to excellence of the Segerstrom family [who own South Coast Plaza] have created a truly exceptional environment where luxury, culture and creativity come together. We are honored to be welcomed into this unique community and look forward to sharing Schiaparelli’s singular vision with the discerning clients of South Coast Plaza.”

Anton Segerstrom, partner at South Coast Plaza, added, “There are a handful of fashion houses whose work truly transcends the moment, and Schiaparelli is one of them. To be home to its first stand-alone U.S. boutique is a distinction that speaks to what makes South Coast Plaza a global destination.”

Schiaparelli has taken a cautious approach to retail expansion since it was relaunched by Italian entrepreneur Diego Della Valle in 2012.

In January, Schiaparelli opened its first permanent Asian store in Hong Kong. The appointment-only space is part of the $400 million renovation of Landmark, a premium shopping center complex in the Central business district. That store was also designed by Roseberry in collaboration with architecture studio Halleroed.

Elsa Schiaparelli, who died in 1973, has consistently contributed to mainstream culture throughout the decades and continues to inspire people, across creative industries and continents. The “Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art” exhibition is on view at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. It is the U.K.’s first major retrospective dedicated to the surrealist designer and runs until Nov. 8. It showcases over 400 iconic objects, garments and artworks.
