The LEGO Game Boy 72046 is a 1:1 replica of the original Nintendo Game Boy handheld that was released way back in 1989. Faithfully rendered details include the two tone gray color scheme, classic control layout with magenta B/A buttons, contrast dial, and speaker grille. All of the text, including the labels and logos, on the handheld are printed blocks. In fact, no stickers are used on the console itself, which is a rarity nowadays.
Speaking of the game cartridges, two are included: Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Also included are lenticular screens for the respective games. The text elements are printed pieces but the game label itself is a big sticker. This is actually intentional because the original cartridges also used stickers for the labels.
The set is catered towards builders 18+ but it’s a fast and fun build. IGN’s Seth Macy built this set and it took him about an hour. The target 18+ demographic doesn’t come as a surprise, either, since everyone who has fond memories of playing Super Mario Land or Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy is probably well older than that.
