Robert De Niro in Talks to Play Baseball Icon Tommy Lasorda

Though he starred in one of the most famous sports movies of all time (‘Raging Bull’), Robert De Niro isn’t necessarily associated with the genre. But Deadline reports that he’s looking to jump back in, entering talks to play legendary LA Dodgers baseball manager Tommy Lasorda in a new movie at Paramount.

Skydance Sports, which has football biopic ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ hitting theaters on Christmas Day, is developing the film, currently working titled ‘Tommy & Me.’

And Reid Carolin, who last co-directed 2022’s ‘Dog’ and is currently at work on ‘Isle of Man’ (a sports movie about the island’s Tourist Trophy motorsport event), is on board to oversee the new project.

Who is Tommy Lasorda?

Following a career as a player in the minor leagues, Lasorda’s greater impact on his sport came behind the scenes in the Dodgers organization, where he elevated over time from scout to minor-league manager to the major-league coaching staff.

He joined as third-base coach in 1973 — under Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston — became the Dodgers’ manager in 1976 and led the club until 1996. During his time as manager, he guided Los Angeles to four National League pennants and World Series championships in 1981 and 1988.

Most recently seen in Netflix crime thriller ‘The Whisper Man,’ acting icon De Niro will be back reprising his role as suspicious retired CIA operative Jack Byrnes in the latest ‘Meet the Parents’ outing, ‘Focker-in-Law,’ due for release on November 25th.
