Resident Evil Requiem Producer “Explains” Game’s Title, Confusing Us More

The meaning of Resident Evil Requiem’s title appeared to be self-evident when it was released earlier this year. However, Resident Evil producer Jun Takeuchi’s explanation for the title from the recently published Biohazard 30th Anniversary Special may be a head-scratcher for even the series’ diehard fans.

“‘Requiem’ isn’t just a title chosen for its meaning of ‘requiem,'” said Takeuchi via GamesRadar. “The spelling of Requiem (REQUIEM) contains not only the ‘RE (response)’ … but also a ‘Q (question).’ In other words, this ‘Requiem’ presents both an ‘answer’ and a ‘question.’ I will explain the meaning of that at some point in the future.”

More intriguingly, Takeuchi indicated that the Resident Evil remake games and the current titles have been building towards a crossover since Resident Evil Village.

“Currently, Resident Evil operates on a two-pronged approach: The numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing drama of the series, while the remake series lets them experience the past,” added Takeuchi. “Eventually, the remake series will catch up to the era of the numbered titles, and the mechanisms for that are already being considered. In fact, preparations for this have been gradually underway since Resident Evil Village, including the appearance of names like Umbrella and Spencer, and the reappearance of Raccoon City in Requiem. This is all in preparation for a crossover.”

Takeuchi didn’t elaborate on what form the crossover may take or how soon it will arrive. However, Requiem has already served as link between the two eras by placing classic hero Leon S. Kennedy in a co-leading role alongside the new heroine, Grace Ashcroft.

The only officially confirmed Resident Evil game in development is Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica. That title doesn’t currently have a release date. Meanwhile, the Resident Evil movie helmed by director Zach Cregger has crossed over $100 million domestically and $208.3 million worldwide.
