Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, spoke with the Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz.

The Prime Minister and the Chancellor discussed deepening cooperation between Canada and Germany across defence, security, energy, and artificial intelligence (AI). Over the past year, the two countries have signed agreements on AI, quantum, and battery technologies, launched the Sovereign Technology Alliance, and secured more than six new critical minerals partnerships.

Last month, the leaders launched negotiations toward a Canada-Germany Strategic Partnership Agreement to further advance cooperation on key priorities, including security and defence, emerging technologies, supply chains and raw materials, energy, and space.

Building on their participation in the Coalition of the Willing meeting earlier today, Prime Minister Carney and Chancellor Merz reaffirmed their enduring support for Ukraine and the need to maintain pressure on Russia to achieve a just and lasting peace.

The leaders agreed to remain in close contact.
