Two sides hoping for a strong campaign despite plenty of summer upheaval meet in this opening English Premier League season clash at St. James’ Park as Newcastle hosts Liverpool.

It’s been a tumultuous close season for Newcastle, with manager Eddie Howe departing, along with several high-profile transfers, including inspirational midfielders Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali, as well as England World Cup star Anthony Gordon.

Stepping into the Magpies’ hot seat is former Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle. The 38-year-old has built a reputation for a high-intensity, aggressive style of play, which should go down well with the Geordie faithful. The new era has seen the club spend over $191 million on five new first-team additions, including goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, while young stars Bazoumana Touré, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen are all aged 21 or under.

Last season’s title defense was one to forget for Liverpool. Clouded by the tragic death of Portuguese star Diogo Jota, the Reds were a shadow of their former selves, only just managing to scrape into the top five. With manager Arne Slot being served his notice and star forward Mohamed Salah calling time on his Kop career, it’s now up to former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola to bring the glory days back to Merseyside. A relatively conservative transfer window has seen them bring in defender Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes and winger Victor Muñoz from Osasuna, as well as Ronald Araújo from Barcelona on loan.

Newcastle United takes on Liverpool on Sunday, Aug. 23, at St. James’ Park, with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m. BST. That makes it an 11:30 a.m. ET or 8:30 a.m. PT start in the US and Canada, and a 1:30 a.m. AEST kickoff in Australia early on Monday morning.
