Pooch on a mission: Regina dog escapes yard, makes solo trek to beloved daycare

REGINA — Behind the placid, brown eyes of Missy, the husky mix, is a committed friend, a daring escape artist and a punctual date.

The five-year-old canine became something of a security camera star this week when she – yet again — escaped her home in Regina’s east end to make the one-kilometre journey back to her home away from home, Spot’s Place.

Spot’s Place is a dog boarding and grooming centre where Missy spends her weekdays.

One of Missy’s owners shakes his head at the pooch who yearns to be free, and says Missy dug up the gravel underneath the gate and squeezed underneath.

“I’ll have to do something there to fix that up a little bit,” Heath Hrappstead said in an interview.

“She’s fine as long as we’re home.

“(But) when we leave, she gets adventuresome.”

Hrappstead said he wasn’t shocked to hear that Missy had made the solo journey Monday morning. She loves to spend time at the daycare and staff say she was likely seeking her best friend, Shaggy.

When Hrappstead left for work, this time without her, she had given him a disappointed look. Missy was scheduled for a vet appointment later that day.

She had, obviously, not been informed.

Cameras outside Spot’s Place tracked Missy trotting across the empty parking lot in a beeline to their door for the unscheduled visit.

On the video, Missy hesitates at the door as the workers welcome in the pathfinding canine. Her tail beats like a propeller as she greets her usual babysitters.

Sierra Davis, client care manager at Spot’s, said she was stunned to see Missy at the door. Video of her letting the escapee inside shows her covering her mouth in surprise.

“There has been the odd time where a stray dog has kind of wandered by or something like that, so that was our first thought,” Davis said.

“It was definitely not even on our radar that she would be showing up.”

Missy was given a complimentary bath — donning a silver-dotted red shower cap — to clean the mud off her trail-weary paws and dirt from her face.

Then she was reunited with Shaggy in a hopping, romping playtime.

Davis said Missy is the only dog she knows of that has ever escaped to appear, unannounced, at Spot’s.

But this isn’t the first time Missy has escaped. The pooch has proven to be an adept escape artist, having made the same journey in the months prior.

Hrappstead said while the route Missy likely took to the daycare was along residential, low-traffic side streets — their usual commute — he doesn’t want her to get hurt, meaning her days of great escapes may be coming to a close.
