Poilievre heads to Detroit to make the case for ‘tariff-free auto pact’

What’s happening on and off the Hill today, plus the news you need to start your day.

With the House of Commons powered down for the week-long Thanksgiving recess, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is booked in for another quick trip across the Canada – U.S. border to Detroit to promote his party’s pitch for a “Tariff-Free Auto Pact,” which he first unveiled in Windsor in March following a closed-door meeting with “auto industry leaders and elected representatives” in Detroit.

Speaking with reporters at the time, Poilievre “said he expects U.S. President Donald Trump to agree to the plan because it would increase production in both countries,” Canadian Press noted in its coverage of the event.

As per his office, Poilievre will once again make himself available to reporters in Windsor before heading to Motor City to “meet with American business leaders and speak directly to the American people through media interviews,” according to his office. (8:30 a.m.)

“He will press for the removal of tariffs and a deal that protects Canadian workers while delivering benefits on both sides of the border,” the advisory notes.

“He will also push for his ‘Tariff-Free Auto Pact’ to protect Canadian auto jobs.”

For his part, Prime Minister Mark Carney will be staying off the public radar today, according to his office, but several members of his front bench team will be taking advantage of the temporary break from daily parliamentary proceedings to hit the hustings across Canada.

Later this morning, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson will team up with New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt and area Liberal MP Wayne Long, who also serves as Secretary of State for the Canada Revenue Agency, in Central York, N.B. to share the details of new “clean energy investments” throughout the province. (9 a.m. AT)

Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin drops by the Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto’s Don River Valley to promote new measures to “support the protection of lands and conservation of nature” during a morning appearance alongside Secretary of State for Nature Nathalie Provost and representatives of the Nature Conservancy of Canada. (11 a.m.)

Women and Gender Equality Minister Rechie Valdez starts the week at the Forks Market Hall in Winnipeg, where, according to her office, she’ll highlight her government’s efforts to provide “direct support for women entrepreneurs” via the Women Entrepreneurship Loan Fund. (9 a.m. CT)

Rounding out the roster, Secretary of State for Rural Development Buckley Belanger joins his Saskatchewan ministerial counterpart, Lori Carr, and Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle to announce fresh federal funding for “community infrastructure across Saskatchewan” during an afternoon visit to the H.M. Bailey Water Pollution Control Plant. (2 p.m. CST)

Also on the radar: International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu embarks on what his office is billing as “Canada’s largest commercial engagement in India in recent years” — a whirlwind six-day Team Canada Trade Mission with stops in Mumbai and Bengaluru to “connect with Indian decision makers, key industry players and potential clients to expand commercial relations and build new partnerships that create good-paying jobs at home,” according to the advisory last week.

“Next stop: India,” Sidhu posted to X on Sunday night.

“This week, I’m leading Canada’s largest trade delegation to India in more than 30 years. 300 business delegates are joining me on this trade mission to India to build new partnerships in aerospace, clean energy, technology, life sciences, agri-food and forestry. We’re also advancing negotiations on a Canada-India CEPA trade agreement, with the goal of opening more opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.”
