PM Carney heads to Thunder Bay to announce ‘historic investment in Canadian manufacturing’

What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.

After spending the last few days ensconced in back-to-back high-level closed-door talks with Canadian business leaders, labour groups and union representatives, Prime Minister Mark Carney heads to Thunder Bay to deliver what his office is billing as a “historic investment in Canadian manufacturing,” although the advisory offers no additional details on exactly what that might involve. (10 a.m.)

He’ll also “meet with crew members” during a tour of a local “wildlife management centre.” (12:10 p.m.)

Meanwhile, three other ministers are hitting the circuit in southwestern Ontario, starting with Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism Rechie Valdez, who will “highlight new measures to protect and support Canadian workers and businesses” during a morning visit to the St. Catharines headquarters of Ontario Shipyards. (9 a.m.)

Back in the Greater Toronto Area, Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden and Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree will promote a new “sport infrastructure investment” in Scarborough, Ont.  (10 a.m.)

Later this morning, Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon will hold an on-camera event in Markham to share more details on how his government aims to ensure “responsible data centre development” across Canada. (11:30 a.m.)

Also on the pre-Labour Day hustings:

  • Industry Minister Mélanie Joly will stop by an unnamed Laval-area “manufacturing business affected by U.S. tariffs,” which “will serve as an opportunity to discuss the issues faced by manufacturing businesses in an evolving trade climate,” according to the advisory. (1 p.m.)
  • Elsewhere in the province, Government Transformation and Public Works Minister Joël Lightbound is booked in for an afternoon appearance at the Alstom factory in La Pocatière, where, in addition to meeting with workers, he’ll “provide an update on future plans for the factory,” which was one of two Alstom plants to benefit from a “historic federal investment in public transit” via the then-newly unveiled ‘Buy Canadian’ policy in January. (1:15 p.m.)
  • Moving west, Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski delivers a fresh tranche of federal funding earmarked for Winnipeg-area manufacturers “as they respond to tariff pressures, strengthen their operations and pursue new opportunities for growth” during a morning visit to Fort Garry Fire Trucks, which, according to its corporate website, “has been a trusted partner to fire departments, delivering reliable, custom-built fire trucks that prioritize safety, quality, and innovation (for) more than 50 years.” (9:30 a.m. CT)
  • Rounding out the roster, Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson teams up with Housing Minister Gregor Robertson and British Columbia Premier David Eby to “ill celebrate a clean energy milestone” in Prince George, B.C. (11:30 a.m. PT)

IN THE CHAMBER

Both the House of Commons and the Senate have shut down for the summer, with regular parliamentary proceedings set to resume in September.
