Prime Minister Mark Carney is warning Canadians that the country’s pivot away from the United States will come at a cost, but that the alternative would be far worse.

In a national video address set to be released Tuesday — hours after Canada’s retaliatory tariffs kicked in — Carney reiterated Canada’s plan to respond to the U.S. trade war by striking new trade deals with other countries to become less reliant on the U.S.

“We have everything we need to pivot and prosper,” Carney said.

“That pivot will come at a cost. There’s always a cost to action. But it doesn’t come close to the cost of standing still.”

The video is the latest in a series Carney launched last spring to update Canadians on government polices and the government’s response to U.S. trade actions.

Carney said the aim is to come out stronger and more resilient so “no country can ever hold us hostage, and that we can live how we want to live.”

Ottawa is joining European nations pledging to ban imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Canada, the United Kingdom, France and other countries are accusing Israel of enabling settler violence and working to expand settlements that are widely understood to be illegal under international law.

In a joint statement, those countries say they “will bring forward national measures to ban trade in settlement goods” and are joining others condemning the Israeli government over the “rapidly deteriorating” situation for Palestinians.

The statement says Canada, France and the U.K. “will bring forward national measures to ban trade in settlement goods.”

Twelve countries, including Canada, used the statement to describe Israeli actions as “tantamount to the annexation of Palestinian land and forcible displacement of the Palestinian population.”

Elsewhere, thousands of Germans have staged protests against the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) after the party’s watershed victory in a state election, warning it posed a danger in two more polls this month.

Demonstrators at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate held a peaceful pro-democracy rally denouncing the anti-immigrant, pro-Russian AfD, which has called for mass deportations of asylum seekers and a rollback of state support for renewable energy and public broadcasting.

The party captured its best-ever state result in the former communist eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, with clear momentum heading into regional elections in the capital and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, on the Baltic coast, on 20 September.

Police reported 5,000 protesters, while organisers said they drew more than 14,000 people in a campaign to mobilise voters against the AfD. Posters in the crowd read: “Fascism is no alternative”, “Stop the Nazi AfD: end racism and cuts to social services” and “History has its eyes on us”.

The Mamdani administration on Tuesday released nearly 170,000 documents related to concerning air quality reports in Manhattan in the aftermath of 9/11, nearly 25 years after the terrorist attacks.

Thousands of New Yorkers fell ill from fallen debris during the attacks, but the extent of the damage to people’s health due to exposure to all kinds of toxins is still unclear. In the years since the 9/11 attacks that killed almost 3,000 people, nearly three times more people have died as a result of health complications in the aftermath of the attacks.

Now, the Mamdani administration will provide the public with an online portal to read documents and information largely around health risks that weren’t previously shared publicly.

“People got sick because the leaders they trusted lied and told them they were safe to breathe in toxic air, and then when they began to contend with the symptoms of the illness that followed, the government that had not hesitated to send them into harm’s way was nowhere to be found,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference Tuesday morning.
