As an offshoot of just how entwined fashion and sports have become in recent years, Pinterest has unveiled its first sports-edition trend report.

Sports fans aren’t just watching the NBA semifinals or turning up at Major League Baseball games, they’re tapping into the colors, graphics and uniforms of their favorite teams for a little fashion inspiration, according to the Summer 2026 Trend Report. Just take notice of the New York Knicks fandom that’s sweeping over the tristate area, and the still-going-strong Adidas Gazelles as everyday footwear trend.

Now Pinterest has pegged how some of its 600 million monthly active users are sporting performance pieces to go out at night, whether that be cropped World Cup jerseys or Formula 1 looks. Stylish F1 WAGs (wives and girlfriends) like Kelly Piquet, the partner of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, and Alexandra Saint Mleux, the better half of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, routinely offer race-day fashion cues. On another sports front, polo shirts and baseball hats from the Masters golf tournament and U.S. Open have become status symbols of sorts with some Gen-Zers.

In line with the upswing in versatile athletic styles is the boost in more undone hair styles and beauty tricks. Along with “pixie cut baddies,” “collarbone lob,” “mixie pixie mullet” and “French wispy bangs.” Pinterest users are on the lookout for “smoky eyes” makeup, butterfly eye makeup, frosted makeup and smudged eyeliner among other styles.

“Pinners” are also planning watch parties that are built around their favorite team’s colors. Think tinsel hair, bandana scarves and jewelry and World Cup stickers.

Noting how people have been infusing sport symbols, team colors, uniforms and bold graphics in an everyday way that hadn’t been seen before, Pinterest’s global trends and insights lead Sydney Stanback said, “It wasn’t contained to one category. It was showing up in fashion, beauty, food, and lifestyle all at once. That kind of cross-category momentum tells us we’re not looking at a single trend anymore, we’re looking at a cultural shift.”

What stood out most was how much female athletes were driving that evolution. Athletes like Natasha Cloud aren’t just shaping conversations on the court, they’re influencing style, beauty, and identity off the court too. Vogue’s current cover shot of the top-ranked women’s tennis player Aryna Sabalenka standing on a beachfront terrace, looking bronzed and toned in a black mesh bra and translucent skirt highlights the collision of fashion and sports. Fandom has become a form of self-expression, and Pinterest is naturally where people go to explore and visualize that for themselves. 

Female athletes are driving searches with Olympic figure skater Alysa Liu leading the field, followed by freeskier and model Eileen Gu, Cristiano Ronaldo’s influencer fiancée Georgina Rodriguez, WNBA player Natasha Cloud and “Caitlin Clark selfie.” As another indicator of the strength of fashion and sports, one of Clark’s more memorable selfies was taken with Gu backstage at a Prada fashion show in February. Others in that field include Clark’s fellow WNBA players “Paige Bueckers meme,” and “Angel Reese basketball.” One designer breakthrough was delivered via “Victoria Beckham aesthetic.”

Athleisure — the combination of athletic and leisure wear — is far from new, since the term was first coined in 1979 by the Sporting Goods Manufacturer Association’s John Gehbauer. Nike, Adidas, Puma and New Balance were among the first to make it an apparel category unto its own and then designers like Tory Burch, Prada and Louis Vuitton jumped in more than a decade ago.

The Pinterest team’s read on this summer forecasts a surge in ’90s minimalist style, which has seen a 698 percent gain in search. That translates to shoppers looking up baddie tracksuits, as well as nylon and windbreaker ones too.

Just as sports-driven travel to marquee events like Formula 1 racing and the World Cup has become a booming business, apparently some attendees want to dress the part. Formula 1 “aesthetic” outfits, including leather jackets and shirts, are of greater interest, according to Pinterest. Capri pants — flowy, baggy and denim styles — are prompting searches too.

With the June 12 start of the 2026 World Cup nearing, soccer fans are on the hunt for World Cup jerseys especially ones from Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina. Consumers are also scouting “jorts jersey outfit,” a reference to the popular jean shorts and jersey combination. There’s also interest in oversized and cropped jerseys too with Pinterest fans. Add some cargo pants, cargo jeans, cargo shorts, patchwork pants and jackets to the mix.

With the America’s Cup underway, it is not so surprising that “Dockside Americana” is equating to stripes, vintage sailor looks, sailor hats and polo shirts. Concurrently, Pinterest sees sheer poncho outfit,” “red jelly shoes outfit,” and “oversized button down outfit” ticking up with searchers.

In terms of sneakers, dad sneakers, sneaker flats outfit and sneaker mary janes outfits are de rigueur with Pinterest users. The game-day spirit is also edging into the watch parties’ menus that are playing up “sardines breakfast,” “sardine toast recipes” and “tinned fish charcuterie board” with pinners. Jell-O Salad is having a search revival too — thanks largely to TikTok — with a pretzel version leading the charge with pinners followed by ones with cottage cheese and another with carrots.
