The loss of points moved them down a spot in the WTC points table – they are in eighth place – with only four points, the same as ninth-placed West Indies, who have fewer percentage points: 4.17 to Pakistan’s 11.11. England moved up as a result, but the win in Dhaka took Bangladesh above England to sixth place.
The sanction was imposed by match referee Jeff Crowe under Article 2.22 of the ICC’s code of conduct for players and player support personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences. Players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time. Teams also lose one WTC point for each over they fail to bowl in time.
Pakistan became the second team to be docked points for maintaining a slow over-rate in the ongoing WTC cycle after England lost two points after the Lord’s Test against India in July last year. As a result of that, England’s tally went from 24 points to 22, and the percentage points slipped from 66.67% to 61.11%, taking them down a spot from second to third.
Australia, the 2021-23 champions, are the WTC leaders at the moment, their seven wins in eight Tests so far giving them 87.50 percentage points. They are followed by New Zealand, champions in the inaugural edition in 2019-21, in second place with 77.78, defending champions South Africa in third with 75.00, Sri Lanka fourth with 66.67, and India in fifth with 48.15.
