For the tech companies, securing power also means building a presence in the US natural gas market. More than 40% of US electricity is generated by burning gas, and many data center developers are turning to off-grid gas generation to quickly secure round-the-clock power even as they wait in lengthy queues to connect to the grid. A job posting on Meta’s website, for example, shows the firm is looking to hire an energy manager responsible for commercial development of onsite generation, which it says includes “confirming the supporting fundamentals are in place (gas supply, land, water, and permitting).”
