Open & Closed: FAA Finally Certifies American Airlines’ Airbus A321XLR Flagship Suite Doors

American Airlines appears to have jumped the final hurdle to have its Flagship Suites privacy door certified on the Airbus A321XLR, meaning that the doors can now be opened and closed. The airline faced headwinds with the introduction of these initially, with the design feature being forced to remain open until the certification was complete.

As reported by aviation insider JonNYC on X, the Federal Aviation Administration finally certified these on July 19, which will now allow this signature feature of the Flagship Suite experience to be utilized to its full potential. The fleet will have the sliding doors activated in phases between now and the fall.

Flagship Suite Privacy Doors Can Now Be Used

American introduced the new Flagship Suite on its Airbus A321XLR, an aircraft which has the longest range of any narrowbody aircraft, and is set to change the way travelers can fly. This aircraft is already set to operate on services to and from Europe, on what are classed as ‘thinner routes’, where an airline usually cannot sustain a widebody aircraft due to demand.

As the airline welcomed its first five of 40 A321XLR, the onboard design features were stalled when the Flagship Suite sliding door did not meet certification requirements set out by the FAA. This forced the oneworld carrier to restrict the door from opening until certification was received. According to JonNYC, aircraft nose number 302 (N302NY) will be the first to have this feature enabled. Aircraft details below as per ch-aviation:

Aircraft Registration

Key benefits of the Flagship Suite include the privacy doors, direct aisle access, a completely lie-flat bed, wireless charging pads, and universal outlets.

These privacy doors are an integral part of the new features onboard the A321XLR and part of the Flagship Suite overall experience. These provide those in the First Class cabin the ability to close the privacy doors for complete isolation and undisturbed rest on overnight flights, or the ability to work away or watch seatback entertainment uninterrupted. This cabin is configured in a herringbone 1×1 layout. These pods feature lie-flat beds, wireless device charging, large seatback entertainment screens, and individual overhead air vents.

With certification now granted, this will allow passengers even more privacy and comfort when on the aircraft’s domestic routes and long-haul European flights, and will see the gradual introduction of this feature between July and September this year. During the gradual rollout, it is worth noting that some aircraft will have this feature activated, while others may be slightly delayed until the fall.

Simple Flying reached out to American Airlines for comment on the certification; however, an airline spokesperson could not immediately be reached.

The First US Airline To Operate The A321XLR

American is proudly the first operator in the US to fly the A321XLR, and the only airline in the world currently that has a Business (Flagship Suite), Premium Economy, and Main Cabin experience configured onboard. The first flight with the aircraft was on December 18 from New York JFK Airport (JFK) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The aircraft is fitted with 20 Flagship Suite seats, which are followed by 12 Premium Economy, and a remaining 123 Main Cabin. While initially operating on domestic transcontinental routes, it has since added services to Europe, with more being added in the coming months. Flagship Suite passengers enjoy priority check-in, security, boarding and baggage handling, while also gaining access to the Greenwich Lounge at JFK.

For travelers, the certification of the privacy door feature finally means that passengers have the fully enclosed privacy doors that they initially were promised. This will shield them from aisle movement, neighboring passengers, and other traffic. Up until now, AA has had to apologize for the inconvenience of being unable to provide this feature until it was finally certified.
