La Liga champions Barcelona have on Thursday confirmed the extent of the injury suffered by midfield standout Frenkie de Jong.

This comes amid confirmation that the 29-year-old will spend the coming weeks, and potentially months, on the sidelines.

Midfielder De Jong for his part set alarm bells sounding in Catalunya’s capital early last week. After reporting to the Ciutat Esportiva for a round of pre-season medical checks, the former Ajax man was revealed to have picked up a knee injury.

As much was suffered whilst De Jong was on international duty with the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup.

A further round of tests and scans were in turn pencilled in by the Barca medical staff, to ascertain the exact nature and extent of the Dutchman’s latest setback.

And as alluded to above, on Thursday, these details have been revealed.

As per a statement across Barcelona’s website and social media platforms:

‘Tests carried out on first-team player Frenkie de Jong have confirmed a tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee.

‘It has been agreed that the player will continue with conservative treatment under the supervision of the Club’s medical staff. His progress will be monitored over the coming weeks.’
