No More Premium Economy? This Airline’s New Lie-Flat Beds Designed For 5-Hour Flights

Cathay Pacific is a legendary carrier, famous for serving as the flag carrier of Hong Kong with a substantial long-haul network and for also being one of the world’s best airlines, holding a SkyTrax Five Star rating. But while its first class, long-haul business class, premium economy, and economy class offerings are top quality, the same isn’t necessarily true for its regional widebody business class seats.

Indeed, its regional-configured Airbus A330s and Boeing 777-300s feature aging hard-shell recliner seats that don’t recline flat, which many liken to being more similar to premium economy. However, Short-haul business class customers traveling with Cathay Pacific are soon about to see a major upgrade, however.

Earlier in 2026, the airline unveiled the ‘Aria Studio’, following in the steps of its next-generation ‘Aria Suite’ found on long-haul flights. It’s essentially a stripped-down version of the Aria Suite, with no privacy doors and a tighter layout, but the direct-aisle access reverse herringbone design represents a huge upgrade compared to the previous seats, offering passengers a true business class experience.

Details Of The New Cathay Pacific Aria Studio

Cathay Pacific first announced that it was looking to upgrade its business class offerings on its regional-configured widebody aircraft in 2024, and the Aria Studio was formally teased in February 2026. Cathay Pacific has been light on the details, but the design is a reverse herringbone seat, the same as the Safran Cirrus and Collins Elements seats found on its long-haul aircraft.

It’s unclear the exact seat model that this seat is based on, but for the Aria Suite, Cathay Pacific partnered with Collins Aerospace and JPA Design, which has developed a light-weight reverse herringbone concept called ‘Airtek’. It will use the same visual design as the Aria Suite currently found on refurbished Boeing 777-300ERs, and will incorporate features like USB-C charging, wireless charging, a 4K touchscreen display with Bluetooth connectivity, and an LED reading light.

However, it won’t feature a sliding privacy door. This is a standard feature for a premium long-haul business class product today, but it’s not common on regional routes within Asia, and this also allows Cathay Pacific to save weight. The Aria Studio is meant to be a lighter, denser product than the Safran Cirrus seats found on Cathay Pacific’s long-haul A330s.

The 777’s Aria Suite, on the other hand, is already an extremely space-efficient product, and the Airbus A330 has a narrower fuselage than the 777. As such, it remains to be seen the overall pitch and angle of the seat, although expect space efficiency to be a top priority for Cathay Pacific. However, this may still result in a drop in seat capacity given that the older recliner seats were configured six-abreast on the A330.

The Current State Of Cathay Pacific’s Regional Fleet

Cathay Pacific currently operates 20 regional-configured A330-300s (along with 23 long-haul configured A330-300s), along with 17 777-300s in a regional layout. The business class recliner seats on these aircraft date back to 2012, and most of these aircraft (including 12 of the regional A330-300s) have received a soft-refresh, which includes updated seat covers to match Cathay Pacific’s current design language, along with USB-C charging.

The eight A330-300s that have not received the light refresh will be the first to receive the Aria Studio, and it’s unclear how many additional planes will be retrofitted. Cathay Pacific plans to trim its A330-300 fleet in the coming years, in conjunction with the arrival of the Airbus A330-900. Data from Planespotters.net shows that 20 of its current A330s are over 18 years old, while the remaining 23 are under 16 years old, so we can expect that these 20 planes will be the first to go. However, these two groups of planes are configured in both long-haul and regional layouts.

The 777-300 fleet will not be receiving the Aria Studio, and it’s unclear how long Cathay Pacific intends to keep these aging but extremely effective aircraft. Meanwhile, the carrier also operates 16 Airbus A321neos with 14 remaining on order. These aircraft feature modern Collins Aerospace hardshell recliner seats and will not receive either the Aria Studio or a similar direct-aisle access business class seat. However, the airline does plan to remove a row of economy seats from these planes to increase legroom.

What The Competition Is Doing

Cathay Pacific primarily competes with carriers like Singapore Airlines, EVA Air, China Airlines, and Starlux Airlines in the Asian regional market. However, it has experienced a bit of a decline in recent years, initially due to political unrest in Hong Kong, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s recovering and in a much stronger financial position compared to before, but perhaps its strongest selling point is its excellent onboard offering.

As such, the carrier unveiled the Aria Suite in 2024, and is now updating its comparatively weak regional business class. Since 2018, Singapore Airlines has offered lie-flat seats with direct aisle access on its regional Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787-10 fleets, utilizing the staggered Stelia Symphony. In addition, Singapore Airlines also offers lie-flats on its Boeing 737 MAX 8s, using the Thompson Vantage.

Meanwhile, EVA Air and China Airlines both operate a mix of regional-configured aircraft with recliner seats and lie-flats, while all of Starlux Airlines’ aircraft offer lie-flat seating for business class passengers. All of these airlines also heavily deploy their premium-configured aircraft on short-haul routes in between longer flights, and the same is true of Cathay Pacific.

Through the Aria Studio retrofit project, however, this will ensure a consistent experience on the carrier’s regional network, which will help the carrier maintain its status as one of Asia’s top airlines. This is especially important given the age of the carrier’s current Recaro recliners on its widebodies.

Cathay Pacific’s Plans For Its A330 Fleet

With 43 aircraft split into two distinct age groups, Cathay Pacific has plans to trim, but not fully retire, its Airbus A330-300 fleet. In addition to refurbishing its planes with the Aria Studio, Cathay Pacific is also looking to simplify its fleet, as it operates six total A330-300 subfleets, split between three regional layouts and three long-haul configurations.

The goal is to standardize to one regional subfleet, and, notably, the first eight planes to be retrofitted are from two out of the three subfleets. In 2024, Cathay Pacific placed an order for 30 A330-900s with 30 options, to be delivered starting in 2028. These aircraft are framed as direct successors to the A330-300, but although the A330-900 is a plane optimized for medium-length routes, its improved range and fuel efficiency mean that it would be ineffective to use these brand-new aircraft purely on regional routes.

Rather, they’re most likely to succeed the long-haul A330-300s, which will either be retired or reconfigured into a regional layout with the Aria Studio. Considering that Cathay Pacific has already invested in refreshing many of its regional A330s, the conventional solution would be for these planes to keep their existing layouts.

Older long-haul A330-300s displaced by the A330-900 would be retired, while younger examples receive the Aria Studio. Meanwhile, the current regional A330s that have been refreshed would be retired and replaced by Aria Studio-configured aircraft in a standardized layout. This is especially logical considering that the refreshed A330s are all over 18 years old, while the eight planes set to receive the Aria Studio are some of its youngest A330s.

The Aria Studio will be the carrier’s standard regional business class on its widebodies, designed specifically for the A330-300. The A321neo will continue to fly with modernized hardshell recliner seats, while it’s unclear what business class seats the A330-900 will feature, given that it will likely operate longer flights. The Boeing 777-300 will likely be retired in the future, while all long-haul A330-300s, Airbus A350s, and most Boeing 777-300ERs are currently equipped with the Safran Cirrus.

The Aria Suite is Cathay Pacific’s new long-haul business class seat, which can currently be found on its three-class 777-300ERs. This product was originally meant to debut on the Boeing 777-9, but delays with this program led the carrier to instead introduce it on retrofitted 777-300ERs. It will retrofit all of its 777-300ERs with the Aria Suite (which will lose first class in the process), and these seats will be installed on future 777-9 deliveries. There have not been any announced plans to install this seat on the Airbus A330 or A350.

Cathay Pacific also plans to introduce updated first class seats on the 777-9, which will eventually be its only planes with first class. Shortly after trademarking the name ‘Aria Suite’, the carrier filed a trademark for the name ‘Halo Suite’, intended for its new first class product, and it has also filed patents for new seating concepts. While it’s unclear how the seats will look for now, many of the filings are for a single-aisle cabin, and if Cathay Pacific proceeds with this, the Halo Suite would undoubtedly be the best first class product on any single-deck airliner.
