On Thursday, the Dallas Cowboys reportedly hired former Philadelphia Eagles passing game coordinator & defensive backs coach Christian Parker as the franchise’s next defensive coordinator. The 34-year-old New Jersey native has a dense and fascinating track record working with a long list of current NFL defensive coordinators and assistants.

However, Parker’s two seasons at Notre Dame (2017) and Texas A&M (2018), working under current Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, laid the groundwork for his ascending career, leading his fast-paced NFL coaching track that started with Green Bay, and will not lead him to the Lone Star State.

After three seasons as the Denver Broncos’ defensive backs coach (2021-2023), Parker began working under elite defensive coordinator Vic Fangio during the 2024 season, learning to work within Fangio’s complex structure that placed heavy emphasis on on two-high shell coverage with lighter boxes, which is usually changes post-snap due a different coverage, and forces quarterbacks to make quick decisions once the changes take shape.

For a pass-game coordinator, this is the best scheme to learn and grow under. Similar to Mike Elko’s scheme, which is based on consistent hustle, effort, and accountability before focusing on coverage, it has proven to work in developing players of every body type and overage scheme “fit”.

After leaving Notre Dame for Texas A&M, Mike Elko brought Parker to College Station during the 2018 season, where Parker served as a defensive analyst before becoming Green Bay’s defensive quality control coach. Parker’s future is extremely bright, and if he can turn around the Cowboys’ defense over the next one or two seasons, I can easily see him becoming an NFL head coach.
