New: Allegiant Air Set To Introduce First Class On Select Aircraft & Adds Complimentary Drinks

Allegiant Air has built its reputation around a simple formula: low fares, direct routes, and a highly unbundled travel experience where passengers pay only for the services they choose. However, the US ultra-low-cost carrier is now moving beyond its traditional model with the introduction of Allegiant First.

The operator is pitching Allegiant First as a new premium seating product designed to attract passengers willing to spend more for additional comfort. The move represents one of the airline’s biggest customer experience changes since its launch in 1997.

Allegiant First will launch in spring 2027 on select aircraft, adding eight dedicated premium seats at the front of the cabin in a 2-2 configuration. The product will not replace the airline’s existing Allegiant Extra offering, but will sit above it as a higher-tier option. Allegiant First introduces a more premium experience with seats featuring a 37-inch (94 cm) pitch, five inches of recline, adjustable headrests, and calf rests. Allegiant First is focused on comfort and convenience rather than premium dining, lounges, or extensive onboard services.

The new product will also bundle benefits that are typically sold separately by ultra-low-cost carriers, including a personal item, carry-on bag, and a checked bag weighing up to 70 pounds (32 kg). By including these services upfront, Allegiant is targeting travelers who may be willing to pay more for a simpler experience with fewer additional fees. Allegiant Chief Commercial Officer Drew Wells said the new product was designed to give customers “more choice” by allowing them to select the level of comfort and value that best suits their journey, rather than changing the airline’s low-cost model.

“As we bring together two highly complementary leisure airlines, we see significant opportunity to expand complimentary and premium offerings in a way that strengthens the customer experience and supports the long-term growth of the combined company. Travelers are increasingly looking for more comfort, more personalization and more flexibility, and these new offerings are a meaningful step forward in delivering that.”

Free Drinks Signal A Shift In Allegiant’s Passenger Experience

Alongside Allegiant First, the airline will introduce complimentary drinks for all passengers beginning August 1. Travelers will receive free non-alcoholic beverages, including water, soft drinks, and juice, during their flights. For an airline that has historically relied on buy-on-board sales, the change represents a major adjustment to its onboard offering.

Ancillary revenue has been central to the ultra-low-cost carrier model, with airlines traditionally keeping base fares low while charging separately for extras such as baggage, seat selection, and onboard purchases. Allegiant has been particularly successful with this strategy, building a business model around leisure travelers rather than competing directly with network airlines for connecting passengers.

However, passenger expectations have changed since Allegiant first entered the market. While many travelers continue to prioritize affordable fares, airlines have increasingly found that customers are willing to pay for comfort and convenience. By offering free drinks alongside a premium seating option, Allegiant can improve the overall experience while still maintaining its low-cost structure.

Allegiant’s decision mirrors a wider shift across the airline industry, where carriers are increasingly moving away from a simple economy-versus-premium divide and creating more segmented products for different types of travelers. Airbus highlighted this trend in its 2026 Global Market Forecast, showing that premium travel demand and cabin segmentation are expanding. According to Airbus data, premium class capacity on widebody aircraft grew by 2.9% annually between 2005 and 2025, compared with 1.4% annual growth for economy class, demonstrating how airlines are increasingly dedicating more space to higher-value passengers.

The financial appeal of premium products has encouraged airlines to continue expanding these offerings. American Airlines, for example, reported that it will offer more premium seats than any other US carrier as it introduces new aircraft and completes cabin retrofits across its 777-300ER, 777-200ER, A319, and A320 fleets.

The introduction of Allegiant First represents a shift from simply selling the lowest fare to offering a wider range of experiences within the same aircraft. The airline is betting that some passengers will continue to prioritize price, while others will pay more for added comfort and convenience. As the US airline industry becomes increasingly segmented, Allegiant’s latest move shows how the boundaries between low-cost and premium travel are becoming increasingly blurred.
