LONDON — Luxury e-tailer Mr Porter has reunited with cult Japanese menswear brand Visvim for a 27-piece exclusive collection called “Motors Revival,” drawing on founder Hiroki Nakamura’s interest in vintage cars and motorsport.

The capsule features racer-style jackets, racing shoes and vintage-style caps, with designs that reference the details and spirit of vintage racing.

Priced between 210 pounds and 7,130 pounds, key pieces that emphasize hand-finished craft include a checked wool and linen-blend down jacket, an embroidered distressed corduroy jacket, a cotton-jersey T-shirt, and a wool and silk-blend twill cap.

“The car from that period, especially, everything is made by hand,” Nakamura said. “It’s just a craft. It’s a human touch.”

The latest capsule marks the second collaboration between Mr Porter and Visvim. Their first capsule, released in 2018, drew on rock-climbing culture at Yosemite National Park. That 28-piece collection referenced books and images from the 1960s and 1970s, with outerwear forming a central part of the lineup.

Toby Bateman, chief executive officer at Mr Porter, said the retailer had made a conscious effort to represent Japanese brands since its launch. He then added that the brand’s interest in products and attention to detail helped him understand the appeal of Japanese design.

“Visvim stands quietly apart from other Japanese brands. Visvim is about the material and fabric first, I would say, then closely followed by authenticity of inspiration — whether that’s American heritage or Japanese fabric heritage,” said Bateman.

The latest tie-up drew more directly on Nakamura’s personal interests than the first capsule did, Bateman added, as Nakamura owns and drives several vintage sports cars and has shown them at racing events around the world.

“This time the inspiration is more personal, and it’s Nakamura’s love of motorsport. So this capsule reflects the style of the car pit, I would say,” Bateman continued.

Bateman touted that Visvim resonates with Mr Porter customers because of its consistency in style and quality, rather than its focus on trends. He noted that the brand’s fabrics, construction and timeless style appeal to customers once they own and wear its pieces.

“When you own some Visvim pieces and wear them, you get it. You get the quality of the fabric, and the construction and the style are timeless and effortlessly cool,” said Bateman, adding that his favorite item from the capsule is the corduroy jacket embroidered with Motors on the back.
