The last several movies in the franchise have been said to be the last, but this time it really feels like the end. ‘Jackass: Best and Last’ is a celebration of the legacy that these movies will leave behind, perfectly blending fan (and cast) favorite stunts with new ones. While it is a little difficult to watch these guys take the hits at their age, especially when they hit as hard as they have in the past, it is impossible to not have a good time during the film.

Story and Direction

Of course ‘Jackass: Best and Last’ features a lot of crazy stunts, but it is more than that this time around. The story is focused on this being the end of an era. In between the stunt segments are more candid moments with Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the cast members.

They reminise about their favorite stunts as a lead-in for them. They also take the time to discuss what this has meant to them and how they are where they are because of their willingness to do just about anything. These conversations make the movie strangely touching at times, which is bizarre to say when a moment later you are cracking up at someone flying through the air in a porta potty.

As always the director Jeff Tremaine knows the best way to shoot the stunts and exactly when the audience needs a break so the cameras need to shift. Blending the conversations in with the new and old stunts is something that longtime fans will surely appreciate.

Even though we have come to expect the wild and crazy side from this cast, there is something special about this installment in the franchise. They all seem to know that this is likely the end – for real this time – so they give it their all. At one point Steve-O talks about how he feels he has never been the MVP of a movie yet. Well, there is no question about it, he takes the trophy this time around.

Johnny Knoxville becomes visually emotional more than once because he knows this has to be the end of Jackass. Their bodies cannot hold up as much as they used to, something that we see during a scary moment in ‘Jackass: Best and Last’ that left the theater silent. Even if they were to pass it onto the younger generation, it just wouldn’t be the same.

‘Jackass: Best and Last’ features about sixty percent old footage and forty percent new footage. Some of the older footage has never been seen before, or is very rare due to MTV not allowing it to air in the show. One thing is clear watching this movie and that is that Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the cast truly love each other. They are the definition of best friends.

The fact that this franchise started before things really went viral on the internet is impressive. No one will be able to recreate the special sauce that makes these movies unforgettable, no matter how hard they try. This movie isn’t about making necomers Jackass fans (although it has that potential), it is about celebrating the legacy and the friendships that were made – and a whole lot of wild and crazy stunts.
