Mourinho’s Press Conference Absence Leaves Ban Question Open

José Mourinho’s absence from Real Madrid’s post-match press conference after the 1-0 win over Villarreal could carry disciplinary consequences, with reports saying he feared that speaking about the game might cost him a place on the touchline for upcoming La Liga fixtures. No sanction has been confirmed.

The second-half dismissal of Vinícius Júnior dominated the aftermath and, according to Managing Madrid, left the Real Madrid manager furious. Tribuna, citing El Mundo, reported that Mourinho stayed away because he was concerned comments about the officiating could lead to a suspension. Africa Soccer also reported that he missed the media appearance to protect his availability, citing Marca.

Mourinho’s absence followed Vinícius dismissal

The accounts agree on the central point: Mourinho did not attend the press conference after Real Madrid beat Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday 10 October. The reported explanation is that he believed speaking to reporters could put his participation in the next two league matches at risk.

Those fixtures are identified in the reports as meetings with Sevilla and Barcelona. The prospect of a ban is, however, only the reported reason for Mourinho’s decision; the available accounts do not establish that disciplinary proceedings have begun or that any punishment has been imposed. Real Madrid’s recent experience with domestic disciplinary matters provides relevant background, but no direct connection to this incident has been confirmed.

The red card overshadowed the performance

Managing Madrid described Real Madrid’s display as lacklustre, but the dismissal became the match’s defining talking point. The outlet said Mourinho’s attention would likely have centred on the red card, as it had after the meeting with Atlético Madrid. That context helps explain the reported concern about what he might say, but does not confirm the contents of any remarks he chose not to make.

Mourinho’s recent comments on refereeing have also attracted attention, including after a Barcelona-related penalty decision. Still, the available reporting does not establish that the press-conference absence was part of a wider club protest or that Real Madrid had formally complained about the Villarreal officiating.

Possible consequences remain unresolved

Real Madrid are due to face Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday, before the reported league meetings with Sevilla and Barcelona. Mourinho’s stated aim, as described in the reports, was to remain available for those domestic matches.

Whether his decision to miss the media duties leads to any disciplinary response remains unclear. For now, the possible suspension is the rationale attributed to Mourinho, not a confirmed outcome.
